Begrebet Angest. af Vigilius Haufniensis (The Concept of Dread), C. A. Reitzel, Kjøbenhavn, 1844. TP + Dedication page + [i]- [ii] = Forord + [iii]-[iv] = Indhold + [1]-184, small Octavo. First Edition (Himmelstrup 68).In The Concept of Anxiety, Kierkegaard describes the nature and forms of anxiety, placing the domain of anxiety within the mental-emotional states of human existence that precede the qualitative leap of faith to the spiritual state of Christianity. It is through anxiety that the self becomes aware of its dialectical relation between the finite and the infinite, the temporal and the eternal (Princeton University Press). An astonishing early work of existential or ontological psychology analyzing anxiety or dread as a fundamental aspect of the human condition. A work which has had enormous influence on continental philosophy and psychoanalysis, and theology in our century, informing the work of Heidegger, Jaspers, Tillich, Niebuhr, Sartre and Rollo May among many others...A work which ranks with that of Nietzsche and Freud in its dissection of the dynamics of neuroticism, Kierkegaard's analysis of anxiety is arguably, too, the most influential modern interpretation of the Christian doctrine of sin (Wronoski, p. 16).Published in an edition of 250 rather than the normal run of 525 - making it the rarest of his first editions. CONDITION: Very good in contemporary half calf with marbled paper covered boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Rebacked with the original spine laid down, extremities rubbed and bumped, front free endpaper with some loss to the upper corner. Sporadic foxing throughout to varying degrees. Det Theologiske Bibliothek stamps to the title page and to the verso of terminal leaf. Some pencil annotations to the rear endpapers.
