Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch, 1872. First edition. Very Good +. Nietzsches First Book Apollo, Dionysus and Wagner!NIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Die Geburt der Tragödie (The Birth of Tragedy). Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch, 1872. TP + [III]-IV + [1]-143, Octavo. First Edition. Schaberg 20. Printing and the Mind of Man notes, "(Nietzsche's) principle work during the Wagner period, 1868-1878, was Die Geburt der Tragodie aus dem Geist der Musik, 1872. In this he adopted a tragico-pessimistic conceptions of Greek civilization, like Burckhardt but contrary to Grote. This started his career as a critic of modern civilization based on disgust with imperial Germany, Christianity, bourgeois ethics and so on." (PMM 224). In this, his first book, Nietzsche theorized that Greek tragedy was built upon a wedding of two principles that he associated with the deities Apollo and Dionysus. The Apollonian principle is the principle of order, static beauty and clear boundaries. The Dionysian principle, in contrast, is the principle of frenzy, excess and the demolition of boundaries. It is in the subtle interaction of these disparate principles that the greatness of Greek tragedy resides, and by extension, in which the creative spirit still finds its proper soil. The book ended with a long section devoted to Richard Wagner and the importance of his music. When first released, it met with only limited success. Despite Nietzsche's eventual near contempt for the book - from the perspective, naturally, of his later unequalled masterpieces of German prose - it must be considered, along with Aristotle and Hegel, among the greatest contributions to the understanding of Greek tragedy and, in fact, to the Greek way of life in general. CONDITION: Very good in contemporary marbled boards and gilt lettered spine. Appears the spine was restored, with most of original remaining. Lightly foxed, more heavily to title page as usual. Overall,an excellent copy.

London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition, the so-called second state with "give" reading on p. 135 in vol. I, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. xii, [16], 516; [2], 588; engraved portrait frontispiece by Heath after Joshua Reynolds, and with the Round Robin plate, and the plate showing facsimile signatures of Johnson; nice copy in contemporary full calf neatly and pleasingly rebacked sometime in the 20th century, preserving the old red and black morocco labels on spine; all the standard cancels are present, per Pottle. Regarding the "give" (versus "gve") reading, Pottle notes that the "booksellers have given this rather uninteresting 'point' more attention than it deserves." Celebrated for its intimacy and vividness, Boswell's Life of Johnson "is one of the best books in the world. It is assuredly a great, very great work. Homer is not more decidedly the first of the heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of the dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of the…

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1890. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original decorated cloth with the title label applied to the front board and the title and author label applied to the spine panel (the spine shows some minor sunning, most notably to the spine label due to the dust jacket cut out -- see below, and the boards show some minor corner rubs; multiple pages are unopened, or are only partially opened, on their leading fold, showing the book to have been only partially read -- or possibly entirely unread); in a Very Good + example of the EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNSOPHISTICATED dust jacket -- original to this copy of the book -- with scattered small tears and chips and with the arc over the spine label split on one side and nearly so on the other. The viewer will notice, of course, that the dust jacket is plain as it is from the period when jackets were used not to sell the book but only to keep the book clean…

Description:
New York: Currier & Ives, 1855. Hand-colored lithograph approx. 29" x 19½" (by sight, and not examined out of frame); a few slight traces of browning, but in all a fine example with strong coloring; attractively matted and in a curly maple frame. "Currier & Ives produced more than 200 lithographs depicting the steamboats that navigated the nation's great rivers, such as the Hudson and the Mississippi. The boats were celebrated as examples of industrialization and the firm often documented the latest advancements in technology. Here, the paddle steamer is shown cruising gently as it travels between St. Louis and New Orleans. Its two stacks billow dark smoke and two American flags fly proudly above its upper deck. Currier & Ives employed many artists to design their prints. Charles Parsons moved to New York City from England when he was nine years old and later became the head art director for Harper's. He produced over 30 images for Currier & Ives and specialized in marine subjects" (springfieldmuseums.org).
