Description:
Ancient world 305 Aesop.
Aesop's fables. A new version written by Munro Leaf; with illustrations by Robert Lawson. Norwalk, Conn.: Heritage Press, 1969, xii, 130 pages : illustrations. A very nice copy with no marks except that the cover has some bubbling –I think it was caused by too much binder's glue. With this minor detraction, I would call it a good copy in slipcase. $9.50
A selection of more than 100 fables rewritten in their newest form, yet the age-old wisdom and the substance are still the same.

Description:
Ancient world 1536 Couat, Auguste, 1846-1898. Alexandrian poetry under the first three Ptolemies, 324-222 B.C. With a supplementary chapter by Émile Cahen, translated by James Loeb.London: William Heinemann, ltd.; New York, G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1931, xx, 638 pages, bib, index. This is an ex-library copy from the library of a major museum. It is not a reprint but the first edition. Volume has the usual library markings but I wonder how often it was consulted as it is in such nice shape. The blue linen cloth binding with the gilt lettering on the spine is very attractive, printed in Great Britain. There is a handwritten note in pencil noting that the book was given to the museum in 1931by James Lamb, 1867-1933. With detractions noted, book is in good to very good, tight condition. $20.00

Description:
Ancient world 1367 Wallace, William and Mary Wallace. Asklepiades of Samos. [The poems of Asclepiades edited by W. and M. Wallace, with translations by the editors and others.]. Oxford University Press: London, 1941. xv, 107p, notes, bib, index. Good, clean tight copy. There is some faint whitening around the bottom corner of the front cover panel, maybe vestiges of powder? Attractively made book with Greek with English translations. $18.50 Box 127
Asclepiades of Samos was an ancient Greek epigrammatist and lyric poet. He was a friend of Theocritus, who flourished about 270 BC. He was the earliest and most important of the convivial and erotic epigrammists. Only a few of his compositions are actual inscriptions. Others sing the praises of the poets whom he especially admired, but the majority of them are love songs. It is doubtful whether he is the author of all the epigrams (some 40 in number) which bear his name in the Greek Anthology. He possibly gave his name to the Asclepiad metre.
