RU 1055 Simmons, Ernest J. English literature and culture in Russia (1553-1840). Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1935, viii p., 3 l., [3]-357p, notes, index. (Harvard studies in comparative literature, vol. XII.) Would be a handsome copy in dust jacket except that at the very top of the cover there was a minor water spill which stains a small part of the cover. The red from the binding has also migrated onto a small section of the top paper edge, near the cover panel. There is a small tear about ¼" inch on the top edge of the front cover panel. The text is very clean, bright and tight. The dust jacket would be very good if it weren't for about half inch missing from the top front cover panel. The dust jacket is in turn protected by a mylar dust jacket. Early contacts: the Anglomania of Ivan the Terrible (1553-1584) -- Russia and England from Boris Godunov to Peter the Great (1584-1682) -- Peter the Great and England; and the period of the favorites (1682-1762) -- Anglomania during the… Read More

It explores the oral and written literatures of regions from Iceland and the British Isles, to Russia, the Balkans, Africa, India and the Pacific, placing them in their historical context and examining similarities between them. "This story of an outstandingly strange and interesting man is a triumph of modern biograpny. Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay (1846-1888) was one of the most extraordinary of all the nineteenth-century savant-adventurers. a brilliant student of Ernst Haeckel, he embraced the natural sciences at a time when the genius of Darwin was revolutionizing Western cosmology. In his short lifetime he made the whole world his laboratory: sponges in the Red Sea, and the ancestry of sharks, head measurements in New Guinea; Negrito races in Malay jungles; marine life in Sydney Harbor -- all these and a hundred other topics and places engaged his curiosity. 'This is much more than a highly literate recounting of Miklouho-Maclay's expeditionary work it is a fascinating and original study of the psychology of ethnographic research. Its main… Read More
