About This Item
New York: Grammercy Publishing Co., 1960. Hardcover. Very Good. Freedley was an actor, writer and best-known as curator of the New York Public Library's theater collection. He was also a cat lover and, in 1943, met Mr. Cat in a Manhattan pet shop, beginning the 16-year relationship described in this short, but delightful memoir. First edition, later printing. About 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 56 pages including an epilogue. Bound in brown, paper-covered boards with drawings by Victor J. Dowling and forward by Lillian Gish. At some point the dustjacket for this copy met with an accident; the salvagable parts of the front and back panels and front and back folds have been laid-in between front cover and fep. Whatever the accident, the book itself is undamaged except for yellowing from aging on inside covers and feps, and previous owner's signature and date at the top of the fep. The book is o/w clean, complete and unmarked, free of tears, creases and bumped corners. Though he wrote several plays and received numerous honors as a theater reviewer and historian, it's not unfitting Freedley is best remembered for Mr. Cat's biography.
