About This Item

New York: Random House, 1973. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. The second novel in Edgar Award winner Gores well-known mystery series, the DKA Files, featuring San Francisco private detective, Dan Kearny, and his agency, Dan Kearny Associates. This time, the case begins when Ballard, a DKA staffer, spots and then reposses a new Cadillac, and discovers a cheap comic book on the front seat containing a large number of hundred-dollar bills. First edition, book club printing. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches, 182 pages in black paper-covered boards with red lettering on spine. The wrap-around dustjacket shows a sporty-looking car in grey with red trim and beams of yellow from its headlights against a black background. Title on front panel is red in a red-bordered white box with author's name below in white. Back panel has seven blurbs praising Gores' work. Text edges show very light foxing, and previous owner's name and date on fep, o/w boards and text are clean, complete and unmarked. Binding tight and square. No noticeable flaws or damage, not ex-library or remaindered. Dustjacket's front panel shows lightly wrinkled fore edge with black finish rubbed away as if a liquid was spilled on it at some point. Finish is also rubbed or worn off front corners of back panel. Inside edges of Dj show a quarter-inch band of age-tanning. All that noted, Dj is o/w clean with no tears, creasing or bumping, and damage does not extend to book itself. A decent reading copy of this DKA novel, which is quite scarce in any edition. Gores, one of only three writers to win Edgars in three different categories, is under-appreciated today.
