About This Item

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, Inc., 1901. First Edition. . Hardcover. Good Plus to Very Good/No Jacket. Largely forgotton now, Mathews was a novelist and playwright at the beginning of the 20th century, with much of her work in the historical romance genre. "My Lady Peggy," issued in 1901, was a bestseller and Mathews adapted it for Broadway in 1903 and followed it with "My Lady Peggy Leaves Town" in 1913. "My Lady Peggy" is the story of a young English noblewoman (17th or 18th century; Mathews' grasp of history is loose at best) who decides to visit London disguised as a man and becomes a celebrity of sorts. First Edition. About 5 1/4 x 8 inches, 339 pages including frontispiece and 7 other illustrations in yellow-orange cloth-covered boards with white floral decorations and lettering on front cover and spine. Inside cover and end pages also with floral drawing decoration. Boards and text edges show some soiling, and lettering and design on spine have begun to flake. Corners are lightly bumped and spine ends show minor wear. No tears or chipping, hinges intact, binding firm. Text is complete, clean and unmarked, no tearing or creasing.
