About This Item

Garden City: The Natural History Press, 1971. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Most books on primitive art emphasize the "art" and aesthetics. This collection of articles on art in a variety of "primitive" cultures views the artwork from an anthropological perspective, with the focus on the scientific examination of the relationship between art and culture. Some two dozen articles with center section of b & w photos, as well as bibliography and index. First edition, first printing (as stated). About 6 x 8 1/2 inches, 440 pages in brown cloth-covered boards with black backstrip and gold lettering on spine. The dustjacket's front panel shows a primitive sculpture against a black background with lettering in yellow and white with yellow and white lettering on spine. Back panel contains description of contents. Boards' color has faded at edges and where strong light has penetrated white title on dj at top of front cover, o/w boards and text show only previous owner's name in pencil on fep. No other noticeable flaws or damage. Complete and clean, no underlining or highlighting. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Dustjacket shows only minimal edge and surface wear, no creasing, no tearing, not price-clipped. These writings focus on the art and artists relationship to their culture rather than on aesthetic value.
