The Viking Portable Library edition of Mark Twain's writing, edited by Bernard De Voto, American historian, novelist, reviewer and authority on Mark Twain. De Voto's selections for this edition include the complete "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," "The Mysterious Stranger," and selections from "A Tramp Abroad," "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," and "Pudd'nhead Wilson," as well as many other excerpted pieces and letters. With a bibliography by John Seelye and an introduction by De Voto. First issued by Viking in 1946. This 1983 edition is in a new format and considered a first edition thus, first printing (with complete letter line). About 4 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches, 790 pages in cream-colored paper-covered boards with brown lettering and Viking Press logo on spine. Sorry, no dustjacket. Boards show slightly bumped corners and spine ends and light surface and edge wear. No tears or chipping. Not ex-library or remaindered. Text edges lightly soiled with occasional tiny dogeared pages not uncommon in a small format book. O/w text is complete, clean and unmarked, a reading/study copy ready for many more years of use.

It also features excerpts from his novels and travel books (including Roughing It, The Innocents Abroad , and Life on the Mississippi , among others; autobiographical and polemical writings; as well as selected letters and speeches. The collection also reprints the complete text of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , including the often omitted raftsmen passage.
