About This Item

New York: Random House, 1944. Hard Cover in Slipcase. Near Fine. Hudson's classic romantic story of a wealthy young man who falls in love with Rima, a young girl living in the Venezuelan rain forest. Originally published in 1904 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, then in a new edition in 1912 by Knopf with a foreword by John Galsworthy that became Knopf's first bestseller. This copy is from the 1944 Random House edition, a first edition thus. About 5 1/2 x 81/2 inches, 303 pages in cloth-covered boards showing an illustration by E. McKnight Kauffer in yellow and green and with a yellow backstrip with gold lettering in a green box on spine. Several color illustrations by Kauffer throughout text as well as the original foreword by Galsworthy. Protected by heavy-card, black slipcase with another Kauffer illustration reproduced on paper pasted on side of case with title and author under illustration. Spine and backstrip show touch of light soiling, o/w boards and text are clean, complete and unmarked. Not ex-library, not remaindered. No noticeable flaws or damage such as tears, creasing or bumped corners. Slipcase, while holding up well, does show some light scratching and flaking at corners and edges. Overall, this is a collectable copy of this edition, which has been the basis for a 1959 movie with Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins.
