New York: Bantam Books, 1963. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. Vintage Paperback, Bantam S2600: "Goodbye, Columbus," a collection of a novella and five short stories, is the late Roth's first book. It was the National Book Award winner in 1960. The title work is the story of a pair of passionate young lovers whose summer affair ends in a surprising, and for many 1960s readers, a startling way. The novella and short stories originally appeared in various magazines. Houghton Mifflin first published the collection in hardcover in 1959. This Bantam copy is a first Bantam edition, first printing thus. White pictorial wrappers with small drawing of man and woman in center of front cover with title and author in black lettering above including phrase, " Winner of the National Book Award," Lettering on spine is in white against black background. Back cover contains blurbs from Time and The New Yorker. Wrappers' color has faded only slightly. Text edges lightly soiled and text itself lightly age-toned in margins. A touch of wear at spine ends and along edges but w/o tears or creases beyond minimal reading crease on spine. Complete and unmarked. A collectable copy. Roth was the recipient of many awards for his work, including six books that were finalists or winners of the National Book Award. "Goodbye Columbus" was the basis for a1969 film starring Ali McGraw and Richard Benjamin.
Synopsis
Goodbye, Columbus (1959) is the title of the first book published by the American novelist Philip Roth, a collection of six stories. In addition to its title novella, set in New Jersey, Goodbye, Columbus contains the five short stories "The Conversion of the Jews," "Defender of the Faith," "Epstein," "You Can't Tell a Man by the Song He Sings," and "Eli, the Fanatic.
