About This Item
New York: American Book Company, 1897. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. James Baldwin (1841-1925) was an Indiana-born teacher and educator who later became a writer and editor of school textbooks, particularly of reading and for elementary school children. This book is a fourth grade text from his "Baldwin's Readers" series. It contains readings by well-known authors adapted and edited by Baldwin to what he believed were fourth grade reading levels at the beginning of the 20th century. Printed and published by the American Book Company. About 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, 208 pages including biographical notes, a word list and proper names pronunciations. Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with blue graphic designs on both covers and red lettering on front cover and spine. Illustrated with numerous b&w reproductions of drawings and prints. Among the readings are work by Blake, Longfellow, Thomas Moore, Dickens, Emerson and George Eliot. Boards and text show moderate soiling and edgewear but are complete and basically unmarked though fep contains the signature of a previous owner and a date (9-3-14). Hinges are intact and binding is tight and firm. A collectable copy.
