Set in New York City in the years immediately after the Civil War, the book features Freydeh, a young Jewish woman living in an NYC tenement apartment with eight others while she saves money to bring the rest of her family from Russia and to hunt her sister who has disappeared somewhere in the city. First edition, first printing (as stated, with complete numberline). About 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 411 pages including acknowledgments. Bound in red paper-covered boards with brown backstrip and gold lettering on spine. Iconic William Morrow logo stamped in lower right front corner. Dustjacket's front panel shows title box over E.J. Belloq photo with author's name in yellow. Back panel contains four blurbs of advance praise for the novel. Boards, text and dustjacket are clean, complete and unmarked. No chipping, creasing, tearing or other noticeable flaws or damage. Not price-clipped. Not ex-library or remaindered. A collectable copy. Piercy's writing and scholarship back up her beliefs and activisim as numerous historical figures including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Victoria Woodhull and Anthony Comstock share the pages with the fictional Freydeh.
