About This Item

New York: Dutton/Penguin, 1994. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The sixth novel in the award-winning Block's mystery series featuring New York City book seller and burglar, Bernie Rhodenbarr. This time the small profit Bernie coaxes from his bookstore is going to be way short of a rent increase and Bernie returns to burglary at a West Side apartment, lifts a large stash of cash only to find a corpse in the bathtub. Happening at the same time across town, the landlord's brother-in-law's apartment is also being burgled for a million dollar baseball card collection. Who gets blamed and has no alibi? First edition, first printing (as stated, with complete numberline). About 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 258 pages in light blue paper-covered boards with black cloth backstrip and gold lettering on spine. Dustjacke's front panel shows small picture of cat next to open attache case filled with cash and jewelry. Lettering is gold against blue background. Back panel has color photo of author and four blurbs of advance praise. Thin remainder line on bottom edge of text and previous owner's stamp on front and rear endpages. O/w, boards and text are clean, complete, no other markings. No tears, no chipping or creasing or bumped corners. Dj shows minimal wear at spine ends, and along edges and corners. Single, quarter-inch tear on top of front panel near corner. A bit of rubbing, no scratches, no creasing. Not price-clipped. Makes a very decent reading copy.

Synopsis

Bernie Rhodenbarr is actually trying to earn an honest living. It's been an entire year since he's entered anyone's abode illegally to help himself to their valuables. But now an unscrupulous landlord's threat to increase Bernie's rent by 1,000% is driving the bookseller and reformed burglar back to a life of crime -- though, in all fairness, it's a very short trip. And when the cops wrongly accuse him of stealing a priceless collection of baseball cards, Bernie's stuck with a worthless alibi since he was busy burgling a different apartment at the time . . . one that happened to contain a dead body locked inside a bathroom. So Bernie has a dilemma. He can trade a burglary charge for a murder rap. Or he can shuffle all the cards himself and try to find the joker in the deck -- someone, perhaps, who believes that homicide is the real Great American Pastime.
