About This Item

New York: Signet/New American Library, 1957. First Edition. . Mass Market Paperback. Good Plus to Very Good. Vintage Paperback: Signet S1453. Shaw, a prolific mid-20th century novelist, playwright and screen writer, is best known today for his World War II novel, "The Young Lions." Blacklisted by Hollywood for his stand against McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee, Shaw moved to Europe in 1951 and remained there for more than 25 years. He was also a highly-acclaimed writer of short stories, winner of two O. Henry and three Playboy Awards. This collection of short stories is his sixth, with the title story the basis for a film starring Robert Taylor, Dorothy Malone and Gia Scala. First Printing, First Paperback Edition (as stated); most of the stories originally published in the New Yorker and other magazines. Mass Market Paperback, 176 pages in pictorial wrappers plugging the Dead Jockey movie with photo of stars on front cover and small photo of Shaw on back. Wrappers show reading crease, minor surface wear and lightly bumped lower corners, no tears, no chipping, not remaindered. Moderately age-tanned text has small, almost un-noticeable stain on fore edge, o/w complete, clean, unmarked and legible with no dogears or creasing. A collection of some of the mid-20th centuries best stories by an author who deserves a wider readership today.
