About This Item
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc./Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, 1973. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. This book represents an in-depth look at two major collections of the work of western artist, Frederic Remington, whose art has become synonamous with Americans' view of the western U.S. -- cowboys, cattle, indians, cavalry, in the second half of the 19th century. In addition to the artwork -- more than 90 illustrations, including 60 in full color and many page-and-a-half foldlouts -- the author, Peter Hassrick, the well-known scholar and curator of western art, has written a detailed text of Remington's life and work. Also included is a full list of illustrations and a selected bibliography. First edition, first printing. About 13 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches, 218 pages in textured brown paper-covered boards with pebbled green, 4 1/2 inch backstrip. Front cover has large gilded impression of horse and rider (this image impressed on heavy brown-textured paper, is also used as divider between major sections of book.). Lettering on spine is gold. Frontispiece is Remington's "Self-Portrait on a Horse (1890)." Heavy-duty, pictorial dustjacket features wrap-around reproduction of "A Dash For the Timber" (1889), a group of eight cowboys on horseback escaping a band of Apaches. Bottom corners of boards are lightly bumped. Brief inscription in upper corner of fep, next to remnants of small address sticker. O/w boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. Not remaindered, not ex-library. Dj shows a long, closed, tape-repaired tear on back panel, some soiling and edge wear. For those interested in western art, the fold-out reproductions in this book are among the best representations of Remington's work. [Given its size and weight, priority/express orders or orders outside the U.S. will require additional postage.]
