About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good/Issued Without Jacket. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, Will Carleton, brought up in a log farmhouse in rural Michigan, was America's most popular poet. Writing about ordinary people and everyday life Carleton enjoyed success the way Robert Burns had in Scotland. "Betsy and I Are Out," a poem about divorce, was picked up by a national newspaper in 1871 and brought Carleton popular recognition, which was cemented by "Over The Hill To The Poorhouse," that brought national attention to the shabby treatment provided the country's old and poor. "Farm Festivals" is Carleton's ninth collection of verse and the third with "Farm" in the title. First Edition. About 6 3/4 x 9 inches, 167 pages with 6 pages of publisher's ads at the back. Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with beveled edges and a green and gold-stamped decorative front cover; titles on front cover and spine in gold. 33 black & white illustrations including the frontispiece with protective tissue intact. Boards show some light surface wear and soiling, with light wear along edges, spine ends and corners. Corners lightly bumped. No tears, no chipping. Front interior hinge partially cracked but binding tight and firm. Previous owner's name on fep. Text edges moderately soiled, o/w text is clean, complete and unmarked. Overall, a very decent and collectable copy of this 135-year-old book by an American "poet of the people.".
