About This Item
New York: HarperCollins, 1991. First Edition, Later Printing. . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The fifth book for Hansen, a master of the historical novel, is set in 1906 when Mariette, a beautiful, seventeen-year-old postulant, enters a convent in upstate New York. When she begins to bleed from her hands, feet and side, the convent community is thrown into confused turmoil. Is Mariette a cunning sham, a sexual hysteric, or does God stalk her like a pitiless lover? Inscribed by Hansen on the title page: "To Judy,/Ron Hansen/24 May 1992." Boards and text are clean, tight, square; dustjacket shows very minimal surface and edgewear.
