About This Item

New York/Doylestown, PA: John Day Co./Bucks County Historical Society, 1937. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good. The account of anthropologist Hommel's unique eight-year expedition in China beginning in 1921 to record and describe the tools and tool-making of an ancient, agricultural society even then being lost in the wake of modern industrial processes. The book's five chapters include "Tools To Make Tools" (coal mining, iron working and casting, blacksmithing, etc; and "Tools For Procuring Food" (plows, rice planting, pruning, water, hand & animal power mills, traps, net making, etc.). First Printing, First Edition. 366 pages in dark red cloth-covered boards with gold-stamped lettering and front cover decoration, 8 1/4 x 11 inches, 535 black & white photographs and illustrations, with a preface by Hommel and an index. Boards show light wear along edges and spine ends, slightly bumped corners and slight spine lean, no tears or chipping. Front paste down lightly soiled and shows names of two previous owners, one crossed out. First few pages of text show light stains in margins, o/w text is clean and unmarked, binding tight. Still a useful tool in its own right and certainly a collectable one.
