About This Item
New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1885. First Edition. . Hardcover. Good to Good Plus. Roe, a late 19th century Presbyterian clergyman, a chaplain during the Civil War, became a bestselling novelist after retiring from the ministry in 1874. His novels, with their strong moral and religious themes, were popular with the middle class in the U.S. and England. "The Original Belle" is no exception, telling a story of a young woman during the Civil War who "was not so beautiful or so good as many of her sisters.but circumstances led her to the endeavor to be true to her own nature and conscience and to adopt a very simple scheme of life." That life sheme brought her love and happiness. First edition, early printing. About 4 x 6 1/4 inches, 447 pages bound in light blue cloth-covered boards with dark blue and white floral decoration and lettering on front cover and spine. Boards show moderate wear at the corners, edges and spine ends with some light surface soiling. Text edges somewhate soiled and stained. Front interior hinge cracked but holding well; rear hinge intact. Previous owner's signature and date handwritten on fep. O/w boards and text are clean, unmarked and complete with frontispiece and author's preface. While showing wear, this copy is free of tears, creases and chipping. Overall, a very decent reading copy.
