The tenth novel from this acknowledged master of the historical spy novel features French military attache Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier, assigned to his country's embassy in Warsaw in 1937 on the eve of World War II. He is drawn into a dangerous world of abduction and torture, intrigue and betrayal, at the same time he finds himself in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of Polish heritage, a lawyer for the League of Nations. Lower end of spine, bottom edge of text and lower edges of both covers have sustained some minor damage by someone wielding a sharp-pointed object such as a compass; lower edge of dj also shows some damage; that noted, the damage is largely unnoticeable behind dj and dj protector, and the book and jacket are o/w in Fine condition. A more than acceptable reading copy or placeholder.
