Description:
1934. Handwritten on Australian Newspapers Cable Service, Times House letterhead. Guy Innes was Manager of the Heralds Cable Service in London, was a well known Aussie identity on Fleet Street, serving on Journalist Committee's and also contributing poetry to the Bulletin Magazine. Innes was born in Ballarat Australia and worked for the Herald Newspaper in Melbourne. In this letter he requests particulars of Gatliff's sons and their children so he can update the family tree. He also mentions multi-published author, and relative, Mrs Nevill Jackson (nee Gatliff), who contributed information. Written at top of letter in pencil is a note from Henry Ernest Gatliff (H.E.G) (son of John Henry Gatliff) 'Mrs Jackson's chart incomplete and incorrect.' Single sheet, writing on both sides. Creased.. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.

Emily Nevill Jackson writes of her recent travels to the USA, and how she was 'charmed with the retold Savoy Stories. They are so amusing and wholesome, a pleasant change from much of the printed output in these days.' (The Savoy Stories was written by the sister of the recipient, Rose Evelyn Gatliff). Description:
Herbert Evelyn Caulfield Gatliff fought with the Coldstream Guards in the great War, although his pacifist views meant that he served just 6 months. Gatliff had a long career in the Civil Service working in a senior role at Treasury. He was also known for his love of nature and walking and was instrumental in setting up Youth Hostel in the Hebrides. The Gatliff Trust continues to this day. In this letter he writes of the passing of his father, his relocation to Devonshire, for the sake of his daughter Jane's health and schooling, his lack of knowledge of the 'Australian branch of the Family,' although he does see Guy Innes' name (well known Fleet Street Journalist) from time to time. Double sided letter, dated August 7, 1935. Creases to letter.. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.

Together with his younger brother, Charles Edwin, Henry Ernest Gatliff went to South Africa to join the British Forces to fight in the Boer War (1899-1902). He fought with the Canadian Scouts and was slightly wounded. This postcard was sent from Fresno California after the war on his way back to Australia. Creasing and wear at edges of card.. Good. In these postcards, Gatliff writes about his many crossings of the English Channel, the most recent in a 'heavy swell,' time spent at Paris Plage, 'a popular seaside resort with sandy beach not shingles,' Stonehenge, which he can seee 'quite plainly from the door of my hut.' Postcards depict Le Havre (x2), Paris Plage and Stonehenge. Charles Edwin Gatliff also fought in the Boer War with the Scots Mounted Railway Guards and The Canadian Scouts.. Good. Manuscript.

Description:
1908. 2 handwritten manuscripts relating to title deeds for leasehold premises at Walker Street Redern, Sydned New South Wales. The Supplemental Abstract of the Title was prepared by Percy Law Solicitor in 1907. The Abstract details the Indenture of Assignment between Frederick Augustus Perry and Elizabeth Hannah Read. This document also provides a concise history of the land which was variously owned by the Albert Ground Company in 1878, Francis White, John Perkins and Joseph George Read. This document consists of three pages. The Abstract of the Title document of 1908 details the transaction between Frederick Augustus Perry and George Ernest Hosking. 3 pages long.
