A guide to the birds of Essex County, which includes the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks and the lowlands of the Champlain Valley. Brief entries on 270 species, rated from abundant to very rare, with dates, initials of observers, etc. Illustrated by several small bird illustrations in the text & a map of birding areas in the county. vi, 33 pp., with bibliography and index, (3) blank pages for notes. Staple-bound, 12mo booklet with stiff paper covers. VG with light wear, minor spots to the cover. A nice association copy linking two noted Adirondack conservationists. Geoffrey Carleton began studying Essex County birds in 1930 and was also an authority on the birds of Central Park. [Richard W.] Lawrence was a lawyer and businessman named by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to head the newly formed APA in 1971 to oversee land use in the vast expanse of the Adirondacks. Lawrence (1909-2002) was also a founder of Adirondack Life magazine and the Essex County Historical Association.
