Hanover, New Hampshire: Friends of the Dartmouth Library, (1968). 1st edition. VG+ clothbound folio in matching slipcase. A collection of 10 large colored plates with type designs featuring the English alphabet and quotes from famous literary figures. Plates are loose in the portfolio and housed in individual captioned folders. Quotes are by Robert Frost; Paul Valéry; Herman Melville; Samuel Taylor Coleridge; William Shakespeare; Geoffrey Chaucer; Walt Whitman; Sir Thomas Browne; Henry David Thoreau; and an anonymous inscription found in a guestbook of an inn in Chamonix, France. Plates preceded by title and copyright pages, brief introduction, and list of content. Bound in light gray cloth. Slipcase measures 14.25 by 11.25 inches, and the inner portfolio is slightly smaller. Plates measure 13.75 by 11 inches. An elegant work of type design / typography in superb condition. Very nicely preserved overall. Rudolph Ruzicka (1883-1978) was a Czech-born wood engraver, etcher, illustrator and typeface designer. He collaborated with D.B. Updike of the Merrymount Press and made substantial contributions to book design and the art of the printed book. His work is collected by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie, Institute, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, and other institutions.

Pencil inscription on the copyright page: "For Lyman Butterfield, with the affectionate regards of Rudolph Ruzicka. Hanover, N.H. November 29, 1968." [4] pp. + 10 ff. Ten alphabets are illustrated; each is printed on a separate leaf with an accompanying quote, which is printed using the illustrated font in a contrasting color. Each leaf is laid into a numbered paper folder with the source of the quotation printed on the front. Housed in a buckram folder, with title printed on spine and top board, in a buckram slipcase. Dampstain on one panel of slipcase, and some general light soiling to slipcase and folder. The plates and paper folders are fine. Publisher's prospectus laid-in.
