1960. The bibliography is reprinted from Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History. Volume 3 part 7 (21 pages, paperback). The Bolivian Pteridophytes paper is offprinted from British Fern Gazette, Volume 9 part8, (11 pages, loose-leaf and stapled) and was based on a manuscript left by Alston in 1958. From the library of the botanist Eric Groves, with his stamps. Interestingly, also included is a set of four passport photos of Alston. [Alston was a botanical systematist specialising in pteridology and was, apparently, the first pteridologist to work at the British Museum (Natural History).. Paperback. Good.

A small number of illustrations on tinted paper, octavo, pp xxxii, 302, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly marked, the dustwrapper is a little worn and foxed, with several small pieces missing on the margins, a slightly larger peice missing from the rear cover and a small closed tear on the front, but now nicely protected in a removable clear cover. ["David was truly a superb naturalist, with extensive knowledge in geology, mineralogy, ornithology, zoology, and botany. He also had in his character an innate respect for people and their culture, no matter how foreign they may have seemed to him. Small octavo, pp viii, 198, + publisher's advert 2 pages, a little used internally, some pages with slight tears to the gutter margin, contemporary full calf, rubbed, worn at the corners, raised bands to the spine but no label. With the signature of an early owner John Gillett on the rear endpaper. With the further Quaker signatures of Joseph Gillett of Somerton and William S. Clark. [Samuel Bownas was born in 1676, to Quaker parents, although his father died when he was a month old. His father had been a Friend during the time of Quaker persecution, with meetings of the Friends having been held in his house. In 1696, his life was changed. SCARCE. [The title is about as direct as the rest of the book. The ramblings of this "crazy Frenchman at Albany" shed very little light on the actual events of his life but give an incredible sense of the energetic character of Louis Menand. There are exuberant paeans to his wife Adelaide (whom he calls "Phanerogyne," meaning "remarkable woman," who died in 1890.
