Description:
1960. The bibliography is reprinted from Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History. Volume 3 part 7 (21 pages, paperback). The Bolivian Pteridophytes paper is offprinted from British Fern Gazette, Volume 9 part8, (11 pages, loose-leaf and stapled) and was based on a manuscript left by Alston in 1958. From the library of the botanist Eric Groves, with his stamps. Interestingly, also included is a set of four passport photos of Alston. [Alston was a botanical systematist specialising in pteridology and was, apparently, the first pteridologist to work at the British Museum (Natural History).. Paperback. Good.

Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1949. A small number of illustrations on tinted paper, octavo, pp xxxii, 302, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly marked, the dustwrapper is a little worn and foxed, with several small pieces missing on the margins, a slightly larger peice missing from the rear cover and a small closed tear on the front, but now nicely protected in a removable clear cover. ["David was truly a superb naturalist, with extensive knowledge in geology, mineralogy, ornithology, zoology, and botany. He also had in his character an innate respect for people and their culture, no matter how foreign they may have seemed to him. It was this, and his gentle manner that allowed him to travel to regions of China where strangers, let alone foreigners, were rarely made to feel welcome. His early collections were so much more than expected - the quality and number of specimens was overwhelming, but it was the careful documentation that made his contributions to the Museum…

His father had been a Friend during the time of Quaker persecution, with meetings of the Friends having been held in his house. In 1696, his life was changed. [Andre Le Notre (12 March 1613 15 September 1700), originally rendered as Andre Le Nostre, was a French landscape architect and the principal gardener of King Louis XIV of France. Most notably, he was the landscape architect who designed the park of the Palace of Versailles, and his work represents the height of the French formal garden style, or jardin a la française. Prior to working on Versailles, Le Notre collaborated with Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun on the park at Vaux-le-Vicomte. His other works include the design of gardens and parks at Chantilly, Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud and…

Albany, New York: Weed, Parsons & Company, 1892. Illustrated with a frontispiece, an allegorical plate and a facsimile letter from Victor Hugo, small octavo, pp xii, 200, (11), rather age-toned but otherwise very clean and tight, original maroon pebble cloth, slightly worn and rubbed. SCARCE. [The title is about as direct as the rest of the book. The ramblings of this "crazy Frenchman at Albany" shed very little light on the actual events of his life but give an incredible sense of the energetic character of Louis Menand. There are exuberant paeans to his wife Adelaide (whom he calls "Phanerogyne," meaning "remarkable woman," who died in 1890. There are rambling thoughts on the various revolutions and republics in France, a scathing appraisal of his arrival in a free land "where slavery was flourishing as carnations," and tales of intrigues at flower exhibitions, all told in the least linear style imaginable. He was the son of a gardener in Burgundy,…

Pimpernel Press Ltd, 2019. Well illustrated, large octavo, pp 288, very clean internally, green cloth with the slightest signs of rubbing, a very good copy in a slightly stretched dustwrapper. VERY SCARCE. [A life with plants tells the story of the most influential British plantswoman of the past hundred years. Beth Chatto was the inspiration behind the `right plant, right place' ethos that lies at the heart of modern gardening. She also wrote some of the best-loved gardening books of the twentieth century, among them The Dry Garden, The Damp Garden, and Beth Chatto's Gravel Garden. Some years before her death in May 2018, aged ninety-four, Beth authorized Catherine Horwood to write her biography, with exclusive access to her archive. Beth Chatto: A life with plants also includes extracts from Beth's notebooks and diaries, never previously published, bringing Beth's own distinctive and much-loved voice into the book. Most of the photographs, from Beth's personal archives, have…
