London: Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co Volumes 1 - 7, popular re-issue. Not dated, but probably c. 1892 -5 (though the British Library lists seven volumes of this edition, and dates it 1881-88). One of the most elusive of all late Victorian journals for the keen handyman. This set is bound in a simple brown cloth which is a little marked worn and frayed, but generally still very sound, though the spine head of volume two is rather torn, and a hinge cracked in volume five. The contents are generally clean, though the folding plans and plates are ofter printed on an inferior paper which has browned, as have the adjoining pages. There are approximately 24 of these folding plates, and they have all suffered some tearing, though generally not with any loss of text. Two of them are detached, and at least one is now in two halves. Several have been repaired at a much earlier time. Illustrated with outline drawings of fruit sections, octavo, pp xii, 247, some foxing and age-toning throughout, heavier on some pages than others, a signature on the front endpaper, green blind-stamped cloth with gilt emblem, dull and rubbed, won at the corners, an abrasion on the top edge of the upper cover, the spine chipped and a little torn at both head and tail. Illustrated, small octavo, pp xvi, 316, all edges gilt, names removed from half title, slight age-toning, otherwise clean and sound internally, decorated cloth gilt, a little worn and rubbed, the spine slightly pulled at the head and foot. [John Ellor Taylor was born at Levenshulme, near Manchester, in 1837. He received no education except some desultory instruction at a school held in the Wesleyan chapel, which he supplemented by private study. About 1850 he obtained a situation as store-boy at the locomotive works of the London and North-Western railway at Longsight. Two years later he was bound apprentice as a fitter and turner at the same works. From 1858 onwards Taylor was a popular lecturer on science. In conjunction with John Gunn he established the Norwich Geological Society in 1864, and founded the Science Gossip Club (Norwich) in 1870. Frontispiece, extra vignette title page, small octavo, folding map (a bit foxed, together with the adjoining pages), pp xvi, 388, fore-edge foxed, a long inscription on front endpaper, page 99/100 has a small corner folded (no loss) by a production fault, decorated cloth, slight wear, the spine darkened, but overall quite a good copy. [SCARCE. The cover describes this as "with illustrations", but the frontispiece and map are all that are required.]. Decorative Cloth. Very Good.

Norwood; Stationers' Hall Court, London: The Author; Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co Ltd Quarto, illustrated with 22 plates, pp (4], 116, deckle-edged, top edge gilt, endpapers a bit foxed and age-toned, the ten sepia plates are foxed on their versos but the plates thenselves show only very faint traces, the blank pages facing the plates have a little offsetting, there is a marginal tear to the plate facing page 37, green cloth slightly scuffed, the corners rubbed, the spine slightly pulled at head and tail. Overall though still a very presentable copy. SCARCE. {The book contains 22 leaves of plates. Ten of these are etched views of gardens or features of garden scenery, one of them named as a view of Keszthely. Illustrated, large octavo, pp xx, 344, foxing to the frontispiece flimsy has transferred to the title page, a little foxing to the endpapers, otherwise an impressively clean and sound copy. [Shaler was an American paleontologist and geologist who wrote extensively on the theological and scientific implications of the theory of evolution. Early in his professional career Shaler was broadly a creationist and anti-Darwinist. This was largely out of deference to the brilliant but old-fashioned Agassiz, whose patronage served Shaler well in ascending the Harvard ladder. When his own position at Harvard was secure, Shaler gradually accepted Darwinism in principle but viewed it through a neo-Lamarckian lens. An owner's tiny stamp on the front endpaper - "Horace W. Sanders". [A publisher's note explains that the authors "Illustrations of the Fossil Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland" had already become extremely rare, and it was decided to re-issue the illustrations as engravings made from the original steel plates. [The Oates/Selborne copy with labels inside the front cover, and the discrete circular Oates stamp on the first and last page. The library was formed by Robert Washington Oates. This book was originally presented to the Newton Library in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge. Illustrated with a charming hand-coloured frontispiece, eight hand-coloured plates, small 12mo (measures 108mm x 173mm), extremely clean internally, contemporary boards with maroon calf spine, a little worn and scuffed and with a small piece missing from the calf. With the tiny book label of Piers Gascoigne of Bath. Very scarce, and an unusally attractive copy; the colouring is of a high standard. [Bingley was an English cleric and a prolific natural history writer. John Frost, the editor of this second edition, was a physician and botanist; he founded the short-lived Medico-Botanical Society of London in 1821. He was expelled from his own society nine years later for "unpopular, presumptuous conduct and displays of vanity".
