Description:
London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans, 1840. First Edition. The most unusual trade binding we can recall seeing; publisher’s paper covered boards, primarily gold and brown, patterned with flowers and semi-abstract lines reminiscent of branches or a river’s course, bordered by blind stamped lines with ornaments; lettered on the spine with the title in a remarkably modern sans-serif type style. The text itself, illustrated with wood engravings, is very typical of the period, but the binding, which was certainly costly to produce, was well ahead of its time. Aside from rubbing along the extremities, very good.
