Description:
New York: Edward H. Fletcher, 1862. 8vo. 4], xiv, [3], 18-220 pp, 11-page advertisements at end. Complete with engraved frontispiece portrait of Bertram, portrait of the author, and engraved title by J. Bannister. Original embossed brown cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. Binding worn, pale browning and dampstaining. Provenance: James L. Ward (contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. "...a most interesting description of Cape Town . which says, 'The habitations . so low and so quaint, with their gables to the streets, covered with whitewash and adornded with venetians, each with its stoop or porch before it after the manner of the old Knickerbockers, seemed exceedingly odd. The small window-panes, and singular sign-boards, and the absence of shop windows, had a singular effect.'" (Mendelssohn, p.119).
