I Dotti Bizantini e le Origini dell'Umanesimo (3 Volumes): `

by Cammelli, Giuseppe

  • Used
  • very good
  • Hardcover
  • first

A very hard-to-find set of all 3 volumes of Giuseppe Cammelli's classic work on three major Greek scholars who were influential in the development of the Italian Renaissance. In Italian.

Very good condition, a little age-darkening, a little tanning on top of front board of Volume 3, a small amount of fraying on heels and heads of spines, but all pages clean, complete and unmarked, bindings tight, sound and undamaged. All volumes bear bookplate and signature (Vol. 2 stamped) of the distinguished medievalist Prof. Kenneth M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Princeton Institute of Advanced Study, and "Phila 1957" in Vols 1 & 3.

Greek scholars living in Italy and those coming to Italy after the fall of Constantinople profoundly influenced the philosophy, mentality and spirit of the Renaissance, introduced new ideas of metaphysics and history and were able to enrich the Roman tradition with Byzantine and Greek ideas on man's place in the cosmos and ideas of virtue from the study of history and the values of civilization.

Under the aegis of the Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento, noted Hellenist and Greek language scholar Prof. Cammelli (1890-1977) provided volumes beginning in 1941 on John Argyropoulos (1415–1487), Manuel Chrysoloras (c. 1355 –1415) and Demetrious Calcondyles 1423–1511)

Limited edition with numbered copies: Chrysoloras #1045, Argyropoulos #16, Calcondyles #735,
