Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1853. 1st Thus (Copyright Edition). Hardcover. First published as a 20-episode serial between March 1852 and September 1853. This edition was originally published in individual volumes - the first 3 volumes in 1852 and the final volume in 1853, the same date as the First Edition in book form. The continental publishing rights for almost all the leading British authors from 1840 through to 1940 were acquired by Tauchnitz. In a number of recorded cases, and no doubt many unrecorded ones, the Tauchnitz Editions were published slightly in advance of the UK editions and therefore represent the true worldwide First Edition. All volumes are uniformly bound up in a probably later red pebble grained cloth with blind stamped borders to the covers and bright gilt titling to the spine. Some rubbing to the head/tail of the spines and corners but overall VG. The page fore-edges are lightly toned with age and old dust, but all generally very clean and tight. The front cover is attractively emblazened with the name 'Elvira' in bright gilt, so I assume this was the name of the former owner (I have many others similar) . The volumes are numbered as follows: -Vol 1 = CCXXX. (6) + 321 pp. ; Vol 2 = CCXXXVII. (4) + 324 pp. ; Vol 3 = CCLX. (6) + 321 pp. ; Vol 4 - CCLXXVI. (xii) + (2) + 304 pp. All volumes have creamy-white shiny endpapers with a booksellers small stamp (Milano) on the front pastedowns, and an attractive 'signed' bookplate - Caramagne - and a quotation in Italian on the front free endpapers. Internally the text blocks have an odd scattered spot here and there but overall all are VERY Clean and Tight. See Images. ; Collection of British Authors; Each volume 6.25" Tall .
