About This Item

London: Constable & Co Ltd,. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1911. 1st UK Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. In the Original red cloth with gilt titling to the spine. Bright gilt titling to the front board. The base colour of the spine is very slightly faded, but this is fairly negligible and all the gilt titling is clean and pretty bright. Some 'pushing' to the head/tail of the spine from storage - but no damage or nicks. Overall Very Good clean, tight covers. The page fore-edges are foxed and lightly toned with age/dust as usual. Internally some light tanning to the plain cream endpapers, and some scattered small spotting (foxing) here and there throughout the book, more at the beginning and on a couple of later pages but generally quite clean. This seems to be a general fault with this type of paper used. NO Inscriptions or other marks. (xii) + (2) + 292pp + (4pp Publisher's Book Adverts) . Also enclosed loosely is an 8vo sepia/illustrated 4pp 'Prospectus/Order Form ' for 'The Book of Paris' by Claude C. Washburn. Also published by Constable. The book includes an interesting Preface by Aylmer Maude, one of the Translators with his wife Louise. 'In the Days of Serfdom and Other Stories' presents in miniature themes developed in Tolstoy's longer works War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The Contents = I. Polikoúshka; or, In the Days of Serfdom. II. A Prayer. III. Korney Vasílef. IV. Strawberries. V. Why? VI. God's Way and Man's. Overall, apart from the scattered foxing, this is a Very Good copy of this First English Translation, very clean, tight and bright. See Images; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
