Description:
From the back cover: "Nearly 50,000 Allied merchant seamen lost their lives during the last war. Here, in Jack Currie's vivid words, accompanied by many rare pictures, memorabilia and unpublished memoirs, is the heroic and largely forgotten story of how they got their crucial cargoes through. At the mercy of Axis torpedoes, guns and bombs, they faced danger at sea in some of the most lonely and terrible places on earth, from the storm-tossed North Atlantic to the vast emptiness of the Pacific. Theirs was a quite crucial contribution to the winning of the war." Many b/w photos plus some colour photos and illustrations, including some cookbooks.

Description:
From the d.j.: "Sisters Tracy Kasaboski and Kristen den Hartog trace their ancestors' path to Canada, using a single family's saga to give meaningful context to a fascinating period in history--Victorian and then Edwardian England, the First World War and the Depression. Beginning with little more than enthusiasm, a collection of yellowed photographs and a family tree, the authors scoured archives and old newspapers, tracked down streets, pubs and factories that no longer exist, and searched out secrets buried in crumbling ledgers, building on the fragments of tales passed down through generations."While this family's story is distinct, it is also typical, so all the more worth telling.

Description:
From the back cover: "Off-course after a failed mission over Frankfurt in 1941, Bobby Keefer and his best friend Jack Calder found themselves forced to bail out of their twin-engine Wellington over southern Ireland. Much to their surprise, rather than being returned to their squadron in England, they were interned for having violated Ireland's neutral airspace. After an unusual interrogation at the hands of the Local Defence Force, the two Canadian fliers were transferred to a makeshift prison camp in County Kildare. There they found themselves subject to a surreal honour system that allowed daily parole away from their internment camp--free to golf, meet women, and drink beer--without supervision. This system forbid escape when they were on parole but bound them, as RAF officers, to attempt to do so upon their return to camp."

Description:
From the Foreword: "The Many Faceted Public Eye". "The eye of the public, like that of the insect, has many facets, and these enable each creature to look fore, aft, overhead and sideways. There the similarity ends, for the insect has at least six legs and sometimes a double set of wings. This equipment enables him to alertly spring toward his prey, away from his enemy or in pursuit of his mate. Humans, on the other hand, are generally two-legged, fumble-fingered slobs whose insolent wits enable them by and large to be sitting ducks."

Description:
From the d.j.: "The first Europeans to reach the Pacific Northwest were Spanish--Perez in 1774 and Bodega y Quadra the next year. According to oral history, the barefoot native peoples thought the Spaniards had wooden feet. Captain Cook stayed several weeks at Nootka on his way to Bering Strait in 1778. The next year the Spanish set up an outpost at Nootka and were the first Europeans to live ashore on the Canadian west coast. In 1792 Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes sailed north from San Blas, Mexico in the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana'. Galiano circumnavigated Vancouver Island effectively disproving the existence of the Northwest Passage. His ships met Captain George Vancouver's several times and they collaborated on surveys and explorations."16-page picture section in the center of the book.

Second printing (revised). "...the area Kennedy knows and loves best is the coast of BC. She has spent some thirty years of her adult life exploring this unique place, with its terrain of lush forests, quiet coves, fierce rapids and mysterious islands, and its settlements that range from frogotten villages to thriving seaports. In the process, she has gathered details of the coast's rich and fascinating history from historical documents and from descendants of the earliest settlers. She has also collected magnificent contemporary photographs, and archival images that were tucked away in small museums and the personal photo albums of people who live on the coast."

Description:
From the d.j.: "Gubby is a salmon fisherman who lives with his wife Millie and cat Puss in a small seaside village on the west coast of British Columbia. He keeps his boat, the Flounder--a 36-foot West Coast salmon troller--at a local wharf with many other boats. Gubby's journey first takes him up BC's west coast, through Georgia, Johnstone and Queen Charlotte straits and north past Port Hardy. He then heads into the open ocean towards treacherous Cape Scott, through to Winter Harbour and Quatsino sound to settle in for a summer of fishing. Gubby and Puss face roaring rapids, rough and tumble storms, banks of fog, a pod of orcas and a tussle with a basking shark, all while trolling for spring and coho salmon and visiting other fishermen and homesteaders along the way. Based on actual events."
