Description:
[Berkeley]: Lawton and Alfred Kennedy, 1972. 7 bifolium cards of various sizes and stocks 6 of which are illustrated. 5 have some text printed on the inside ranging from the printer's credit to short poems or blurbs. Generally near fine or better. Beautiful set New Year's and Season's Greetings cards from the Bay Area fine printer brothers, Lawton and Alfred Kennedy. Lawton worked for John Henry Nash, the Grabhorns and others before establishing his own press in 1952. This 1953 New Year's card on glossy stock likely represents one of the earliest efforts from that time. Two other cards from Lawton are dated 1956 and 1969 and the other two are undated. The two larger, colored cards are quite stunning, one containing a woodcut Astronomer Scanning the Moon with a Quadrant, by anonymous Master DS, Basel, CA 1508, and the other an ocean scene with color scheme by Paul Quentin Foster accompanied by an interior quote from Moby Dick. The two cards from the no-less-skilled younger brother…

Los Angeles: Jake Zeitlin, 1930. First edition. 24x17cm, [24]pp. Stitched in plain card wrappers in patterned paper jacket with printed label on front. Internally clean and sound, jacket toned and lightly chipped. Very good. First edition of this collection of lyric poetry from Sarah Bixby Smith (1871-1935) of the Bixby family of California pioneers. Smith is remembered for her memoir, Adobe Days, chronicling her childhood on a sheep ranch in Rancho San Justo, and her family's involvement in the development of Los Angeles. She was also a women's education advocate, president of the Friday Morning Club and vice president of the American Association of University Women. Her earlier collections of California verse were printed by the Torch Press in Iowa. However, this collection was printed by Jake Zeitlin, Los Angeles bookseller, two years after opening his first shop on Hope Street. A scarce piece of Southern California printing. .

San Francisco: Bacon & Company, Printers, 1872. First edition. 8vo, 300pp. Blind and Gilt stamped red cloth in very good condition with sunning and fading to spine, edge wear, and some scuffing. Front pastedown with a small doodle in purple, rear pastedown with a tear to bottom edge. Couple marginal spots else clean internally. Uncommon volume of poetry with an interesting San Francisco imprint. Eliza Ann Woodruff Hopkins (1811-1878) before coming to California, was a resident of Joliet, IL, and assistant editor of the True Democrat newspaper. She married the prospector, Charles Bronson Hopkins in 1837, who later left her alone with their children to find his fortune in the west. She finally made her way out to California in the early 1860's to reunite her family. There is a review of this collection in Bret Harte's Overland Monthly, volume 9, 1872: "Mrs. Hopkins says of her book: 'Perhaps the volume may not inaptly be compared to our California Highways - with its big and little…

New York: Cab Calloway, Inc, 1948. Two 10x8" silver gelatin publicity photos, both showing Calloway, in his double breasted suit. One photo is inscribed by Calloway to a Peggy Jo, and the other is signed by his small band, the Cab Jivers. Caption pasted to the lower margin of each, few remnants to corners from previous mounting. Generally very good. Fantastic set of signed photos from the great American band leader. In 1948, Calloway disbanded his large orchestra in favor of a smaller band of 7, called the "Cab Jivers." This downsized group consisting of Panama Francis, Jonah Jones, Milt Hinton, Dave Rivera, Sam Taylor, F "Keg" Johnson, and Hilton Jefferson was suitable for smaller venues as well as television appearances. Each member has signed the closeup photo of Calloway, and Cab has inscribed the other with best wishes and "Hi de Ho." Photos signed by the entire ensemble are not common. .

Crosswicks, New Jersey, 1887. No Binding. Very Good. Early and scarce signature from Charles Wadsworth Camp, a hubin listed mystery author, WWI veteran, and perhaps most famously, the father of Madeleine L'Engle. 2 leaves from one of his childhood books, Colonial Days: Stories and Ballads for Young Patriots, by Richard Markham. The first leaf is the decorated front endpaper which states "one of W. Camp's favorite books when a little boy." The The second leaf, with the frontis on the verso, has Camp's full signature, dated in 1887 at his family estate, Crosswicks, New Jersey. He would have been 10 years old at the time. Very good with chipping and wear to edges and some foxing.

Description:
Fort Sill: School of Fire for Field Artillery, 1916. Hardcover. Good. WWI manual and journal belonging to Charles Wadsworth Camp of the 305th field artillery regiment. Camp, a mystery writer, drama critic, and father of author Madeleine L'Engle, would later go on to write a history of the 305th. Being exposed to mustard gas during his time in the field, he would succumb to pneumonia some 20 years later at the age of 57. 53 printed pages of manual at the rear, 31 pages of manuscript notes, diagrams, lists, essays, etc. written recto-verso in the front section of the journal. Camp's name and regiment on front of first page. Roughly twice that number of blank pages in the middle with a few others jotted on. Rear page of the manual is detached as is the front leather cover. 3 ring binder mechanism is sound and showing nice patina of age. Incredible piece of history from an important literary figure whom today is much overlooked.
