Cadmus, Paul (American 1904-1999). STUDY FOR "WINTER." Black and white crayons on paper stained gray, 1977. Signed in white crayon, upper left. 10 1/4 x 15 1/2 inches. In excellent condition.The drawing is a preparatory study for "WINTER," an egg yolk tempera painting done in 1977. The painting is number 44 in Eliasoph, "Paul Cadmus Yesterday and Today" the catalogue of an exhibition of works by Cadmus at the University of Miami in 1981. The painting is illustrated on Page 62, and a more finished version of our drawing titled "Final Study for Winter" Number 91 in the Miami catalogue, and is illustrated on page 109.

Description:
Cadmus, Paul (American, 1904-1999). STUDY FOR "DAVID AND GOLIATH," colored crayons on tan paper. Signed in pink crayon, lower right. 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. In excellent condition. Provenance: the artist to John Anderson, Estate of Jon Anderson. This is one of several studies for Cadmus's painting "David and Goliath" from 1971,some of them very quick sketches, others very finished drawings. The painting, and this study, depict the young Anderson as David and the older Cadmus as Goliath. Jon Anderson (1937-2018) met Paul Cadmus in 1965, and the two were partners for 36 years until Cadmus's death in 2000. Cadmus drew and painted Anderson hundreds of times. A more finished version of this subject is Number 62, illustrated on page 93, of the catalogue for the 1981 exhibition "Paul Cadmus Yesterday and Today, presented by the University of Miami in 1981. Two other studies are illustrated on page 67 of Davenport, "the Drawings of Paul Cadmus, Rizolli, 1989.

Parr, Remi. (Canaletto) Remi Parr (After Canaletto). AN INSIDE VIEW OF THE ROTUNDO IN RANELAGH GARDENS. Engraving with hand-coloring, 1751. Robert Sayer, London, 1751. 10 1/8 x 15 3/4 inches (image); 14 x 19 1/2 inches (sheet). Engraved by Parr, 1723-?, an English artist known for engraved views of London, after the well-known painting of this subject by Canaletto. Canaletto spent many years in England, and painted many architectual views. The Ranelagh Gardens was a park in the Chelsea area, that served, along with Vauxhall as a "pleasure garden" for Londoners in the 18th Century. The Rotunda was used for entertainments, including a performance there by Mozart in 1764. A repaired tear in the lower left margin, extending only about 1/8 inch into the image; residue from removal of tape around the edges, verso, else in very good condition.
