Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, (1984).. First edition, 8vo, 160 pp. Inscribed from Dahl on the half title to his childhood friend Douglas Highton, and with two autograph letters also inserted. Cloth, d.w., a fine copy. The first letter, on a headed postcard, was sent with the book - "This little book is published next week. You will find yourself in it..." Dahl starts, referring to a story featured on pp. 108-111 where as a schoolboy Dahl had been unfairly punished and Highton had written to his father to complain about it. It didn't help, but Dahl concludes the printed account "it was... a touching and generous gesture from one small boy to another and I have never forgotten it." He goes on (in the postcard) to admit that some parts of the book "are slightly coloured by my natural love of fantasy." The second letter, again on headed stationery, must date from a few months later, with Dahl mentioning that he has had letters complaining about the portrayal of their school… Read More

London: Printed by T. Bensley, 1815, 30, 32, 19.. Four volumes, 4to. First two volumes (Chichester and Bramber) first edition, third volume (Arundel) "New Edition", plus the very rare first edition of the Arundel volume, large 4to. 83 plates - two double page and four in colour, 19 maps and plans - 15 double page or folding and including two geological maps in the Bramber volume. Marbled endpapers and edges, bookplates of Charles and Mary Lacaita of Selham. Contemporary calf with gilt decorated borders and the arms of George Leveson-Gower, Duke of Sutherland, to the covers, rebacked to style with brown and black labels. A very scarce set due to a fire at the printers in 1819 which destroyed 300 (of 500) copies of the Chichester volume and almost the entire run of the original Arundel volume, with only 30 copies surviving. Only 200 copies of the new edition of Arundel and Bramber were published.

Folio, (iv), viii, (vii)-xvi, 406, (2) pp. 18 plates, including 3 not listed - one of the latter the binder is directed to transfer to the volume on Bramber, plus six maps and plans, four of which are double page, one plate hand coloured, and engravings in the text. Old signature to paste down. Original boards, edges a little worn, recently rebacked in plain green cloth. Scarce - after a fire at the printing office destroyed almost all of the 1815 first edition only 200 copies of this new edition were published.

Inscribed on the fly leaf by the cast of the Old Vic's 1942 production of Laurence Housman's "Jacob's Ladder", including the author and both Lewis and Ann Casson. Original gilt titled buckram, very good. The inscription starts "Thank you, beautiful Clarkie, it was all your doing..." and was quite possibly to Kathleen Clark, noted as business manager for the Old Vic on a 1942 poster for the play.
