Description:
London: W. Stahan and T. Cadell, 1771. Extremities a little worn and hinges just starting although still firm.. Two volumes, quarto, with the erratum leaf in the second volume; a very good set in contemporary polished calf, with double spine labels in red and green morocco. A handsome set in a contemporary binding of this history of Great Britain and Ireland in the seventeenth century. The work caused a mild sensation when it was published because of Dalrymple's unvarnished use of letters from the French ambassadors in England to their courts, as well as the correspondence of Charles II, James II, William, and Mary. Sir John Dalrymple (1726-1810), fourth baronet of Cranstoun was educated at the university of Edinburgh and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1748 he was admitted to the Scottish bar, and succeeded to the baronetcy in 1771 on the death of his father Sir William Dalrymple. A reasonably prolific essayist, the Memoirs was his most significant work; illustrated by access to state papers in…

Description:
London: Printed for James and John Knapton, 1729. Sides of the binding a little rubbed -- appropriate patina; a fine set.. Four volumes, octavo, with a total of 63 engraved plates (19 folding), including 19 maps; contemporary calf, spines exceptionally skilfully renewed and old labels preserved, a fine set. The "best" edition of Dampier: the complete collected edition of the exciting travels of the English explorer, pirate, privateer, navigator, and naturalist William Dampier (1651-1715). He was the first person to make three circumnavigations, and the most significant explorer between Drake and Cook, borrowing bravado from Drake and anticipating Cook's methods of inquiry. Dampier was of course the first Englishman to land on and explore any part of the Australian continent: the first volume here includes his recollection of how, in 1688, "being now clear of all the Islands, we stood off South, intending to touch at New Holland, a part of Terra Australis Incognita, to see what the country would…

Description:
London: John Harris, 1744. Some browning yet very good.. Engraved chart measuring 245 x 410 mm. (sheet size). The Bowen map of William Dampier's discoveries along the Papuan coastline and adjacent islands. Dampier sailed in the Roebuck in January of 1699, landing in Shark Bay, Western Australia in July of that year, before going on to explore the Papuan coastline in some detail. This map charts the path of the Roebuck from Timor to the large islands to the northeast of New Guinea named New Britain by Dampier. The voyage of the Roebuck is one of the most significant expeditions to the region, but was disastrous for Dampier, especially after the vessel, rotten and leaking badly for much of the voyage, finally foundered at Ascension Island. This fine map was engraved by Emanuel Bowen (1694-1767), one of the pre-eminent English cartographic printers of his era and geographer to both King George II and Louis XV. Bowen drew upon a wide range of materials to ensure the accuracy of his work, attracting…

Description:
Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1930. A fine copy.. Large octavo, colour illustrations; original gilt-decorated cloth. Dana, a Harvard man, spent two years voyaging by sea between 1834 and 1836, visiting many ports in the Americas. His work is vivid and important, particularly regarding California and rounding Cape Horn (the latter passage was enthusiastically admired by Melville). His experiences made him an advocate for the common sailor and, later, for the oppressed, as he became a prominent anti-slavery activist. A contemporary bestseller, this edition was printed by the famous Lakeside Press in Chicago, under the supervision of William A. Ketteridge, and limited to 1,000 copies. .

Description:
London: House of Commons, 14 July, 1828. A fine copy.. Tall quarto, 10 pp. and docket title sheet; unfolded. Fascinating collection of published correspondence from Governor Darling to British Parliament concerning the dramatic punishment of troops dodging their service in the New South Wales 57th Regiment. Darling established his authoritarian reputation through disciplinary measures such as these 'in order that soldiers who wantonly sacrifice their character may not deceive themselves by a groundless hope of escaping punishment.' The first dispatch reveals seven recent cases of soldiers of the 57th maiming themselves or committing brazen crimes to escape the full term of their service (further transportation being preferable to time in the army). Darling made an example of two of the soldiers caught stealing cloth in broad daylight with no attempt at concealment, ordering that Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson 'be immediately stripped of their uniform in presence of the troops, and be dressed in…

Description:
London: William Day, 1854. One blank margin a little chipped (with no loss), very good condition.. Lithographed plan; 340 x 425 mm. Attractive English map of Cape Town, showing the street plan of the city with detail of public parks and thoroughfares, the waterfront onto Table Bay, cemeteries, hospitals, quarries and the like. The lower portion of the sheet is decorated with a tranquil vista of shipping in the bay against the backdrop of Table Mountain. The map was printed in London by the younger William Day (1823-1906), lithographer by appointment to Queen Victoria. Day is remembered as an innovative publisher who offered interesting maps including the North Atlantic ice fields, telegraphic lines of Europe and steamship routes between Europe and America. As a leading London printer, Day flourished in his role as editor of the trade journal "The Chromolithographer" during the 1850's. .

London: Scott, Webster & Geary, 1837. Binding lightly rubbed, very good overall.. Duodecimo, frontispiece and engraved title-page; contemporary roan with gilt to spine and boards. An attractive fore-edge painting based upon the famous Sydney Cove view engraved by Edward Dayes. This image, transmitted through various forms (from oil on canvas to engraving to fore-edge painting) is believed to be the work of convict artist Thomas Watling. Engravings by Dayes after originals by Watling feature in the First Fleet accounts of Collins and Hunter, and are now iconic Australiana images. The present for-edge rendition is skilfully executed, painted under the gilding and only to be revealed only when the pages are gently fanned. An old clipping from a booksellers catalogue advertising this book (circa 1930) notes the Sydney view, and the pastedown bears the bookplate of New Zealand book collector and art critic E. C. Simpson. William Smellie (1740-1795) was the editor of the first edition of the Encyclopedia…

Description:
Geneva: heirs of Pierre de la Rovière, 1630. A little intermittent browning; light worm damage to a couple of endpapers; a very good set.. Folio, five volumes bound in four, contemporary full vellum; with contemporary annotations to front blank of first volume. Early edition of the influential, and highly controversial, history of Europe by French luminary Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617). A successful lawyer and career diplomat, de Thou remained devoted to the cultivation of the mind throughout his prolific political career. He amassed an impressive personal book collection and in 1593 was appointed director of the Royal Library. Access to such abundant printed and manuscript material, selected with characteristic diligence, allowed de Thou to write a foundational history of Europe spanning the years 1544 to 1607. De Thou was horrified by the unhappy history of religious intolerance and violence that plagued his lifetime, and his history reflects this (especially the treatment of the St.…

Description:
Amsterdam, 1662. Fine condition.. Engraved map, 460 x 560 mm., with original handcolouring; mounted. Fine early map of the East Indies showing the north-Australian discoveries of Abel Tasman. Frederick de Wit was one of the foremost map-makers in Holland, whose 'maps were distinguished by their excellent craftsmanship, exactness and beauty...' (Schilder). This map stretches from Persia in the west to China and Taiwan in the east, and shows northern "Hollandia Nova", bearing three significant place names: "Van Diemens Landt"; "Baya van Diemen" and "Vuyle hoeck" (the last a disparaging term meaning something like "rotten corner" and evidently relating to the inhospitable coastline). These were among the names given to places on the north coast of Australia by Tasman during his voyages of 1642 and 1644 in the service of the Dutch East India Company. 'Frederick de Wit, an apprentice of William Blaeu... became one of the most prominent and successful map engravers and publishers in Amsterdam following…

Description:
Paris: Librairie Delagrave, 1880. Small nick to spine, joints very lightly rubbed, otherwise excellent.. Large octavo, with 175 illustrations, including 14 double-page plates and a map; a fine copy in quarter green grained morocco, spine faded to uniform brown, marbled endpapers. The first major study of Khmer architecture, and a very handsome book. Delaporte, as a young officer and a talented artist, was a member of the 1866-68 Mekong Expedition and was responsible for the magnificent illustrations in the official account of that epic journey. He subsequently returned to Cambodia and prepared this important study of the country's architecture. A great evangelist for the art of Cambodia, he wrote here about his 1866 visit to Angkor Wat that "Khmer art, issuing from the mixture of India and China, purified, ennobled by artists whom one might call the Athenians of the Far East, has remained the most beautiful expression of human genius in this vast part of Asia" ("L'art khmer, issu du mélange de…

Paris: Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1782. A few early and late pages with some browning at head and foot.. Duodecimo, engraved title, engraved plate, half-title, single page approbation at rear, a lovely copy in contemporary tan calf, flat spine gilt with red morocco label, bumped. A rare work and a very attractive copy of the most celebrated and influential poem of Delille, in which the author celebrated the virtues of the natural garden or jardin anglais, rather than the fashion for neoclassical symmetry. The work includes a famous cameo appearance by "Poutaveri", that is the Tahitian Autourou, who returned to France with Bougainville. In the poem, Poutaveri glimpses a mulberry tree - the plant most commonly used in the manufacture of tapa cloth - and is overwhelmed with homesickness for Tahiti. The name Poutaveri is interesting as it was actually Autourou's rendering of the name "Bougainville", a name he took in honour of his former captain and Parisian host. Jacques Montanier de Lille (1738-1813) was…

Paris, 1814. Very good condition.. Manuscript letter, 227 x 183 mm., on a bifolium sheet, letter comprising first page with two blank pages, the fourth page an address panel, dated and signed by Rossel; folded to letter size, addressed with remnants of seal. A friendly letter from Paul-Édouard Rossel to the Vicomte Charles Morel de Vinde, agronomist, politician, and man of letters, expressing his hope that a set of the d'Entrecasteaux voyage publication, with accompanying atlas, will be well received. The letter was sent during the peace established by the first Treaty of Paris (signed in May 1814). Rossel had edited the official account of the d'Entrecasteaux voyage for publication, a process which took many years due to the political fall-out from the Revolution. By the time the expedition had reached Dutch Java Rossel was the commanding officer, and despite his inexperience "was to prove a resourceful and able commandant in a passage that had perils and hardships in store" (Horner, Looking for…

New York: I. Riley and Co, 1806. Map closed tear at the fold with closed tear at the fold, with light browning and foxing typical of American books of the era.. Three volumes, octavo, large folding map with closed tear at the fold, with light browning and foxing typical of American books of the era, but here unusually moderate; a very good set in attractive contemporary marbled sheep (scuffed, joints rubbed) original green morocco labels a little chipped. This scarce New York publication is the first edition in English of this 'important account of Venezuela giving a description of the country and people and also accounts of growth and production of cocoa, indigo, sugar, cotton, coffee, and tobacco' (Hill). From 1801 to 1804 François Depons lived in Venezuela, where he worked as a political and diplomatic correspondent of the French government. His account, which he began in Caracas and completed in France, is of great historical importance, providing the first modern vision of Hispanic America. It…

London: G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1823. Occasional foxing, lightly rubbed at extremities.. Tall quarto, copperplate engraved music and text; contemporary half calf, a very handsome copy, the spine gilt and with an unusual triple "harlequin" set of labels in red, white & blue. First edition of this early collection of the patriotic ditties and rollicking shanties of the British navy: a fascinating and important record of the conditions of the Georgian sailor. Many of the songs had a lasting influence on the spirit of the navy, especially during the protracted war with France. Each is present in an engraved musical score with lyrics. The collection was put together by the prolific Charles Dibdin (1745-1815). His son Thomas, in a brief biographical notice appended to the 1850 collective edition of his father's sea-songs, remarked: 'These songs have been the solace of sailors in long voyages, in storms, in battles; and they have been quoted in mutinies to the restoration of order and discipline'. Sydney: Thomas H. Feilding, 1883. Cloth sides of the binding scuffed and marked, otherwise fine, with the text and plates clean and crisp.. Quarto, etched additional title-page, and 21 etched plates (plate 7 present in two forms, as noted in the Preface); publisher's half roan. First edition and quite rare: the first purely artistic suite of etchings produced in Australia. Excellent impressions, well inked on thick paper, they have a real charm and vitalilty. Coveny, an illustrator and painter of literary subjects, was the first to produce a series of etchings or engravings outside the natural history and topographical genres. This suite of plates shows a mastery of the form and is not only a good example of the art of etching but also a key work in the development of printing arts in colonial Australia. The book was printed by John Sands who, coincidentally, had worked in England on the illustration of Dickens's novels. A self-taught printmaker, Twenty Scenes, published when he was 36 years old,…

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1836. Five volumes, small octavo; original quarter pink cloth and plain boards, printed spine labels; preserved in separate folders contained together in a quarter morocco bookform slipcase. Pickwick in its earliest book form: Dickens' first great work, completed when he was just 24. This very scarce first American edition predated the English book edition, at a time before any international forms of copyright, a practice that was to cause its author great annoyance. The first four volumes of this Philadelphia edition were published between November 1836 and September 1837. The one-volume book edition in England was not issued until November 1837, with the fifth volume of this American edition appearing in December. Only about 1500 copies of the first volume were…

Description:
London: Chapman and Hall, 1837. Some wear to a couple of spines, some stitching a little loose; the first part a little aged; generally in fine original condition.. Twenty numbers as published, in the original nineteen monthly wrappered octavo parts; forty-three inserted engraved plates, including frontispiece and vignette title-page; original green printed wrappers designed by Seymour; in a custom-made quarter morocco case. A most attractive set of Pickwick in original parts, well-preserved by a series of owners, and in unsophisticated condition. Collation of a Pickwick in parts is famously laborious. There are often multiple varying states or issues of individual components, whether text, engravings, wrappers, or advertisements. Changes were made to engravings as they were reprinted, sometimes because the plates wore out, errors in the text were corrected, and changes to the wrappers were frequent to revise the advertisements that they included. Suffice to say of this set that, as with most, it is…
