1833. Mezzotint. 570mm by 445mm (frame). Field Marshal Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, GCB, PC was a British Army officer and politician. After serving in the Peninsula War and the Waterloo Campaign he became Secretary at War in Wellington's ministry. After a tour as Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1830 he became Secretary at War again in Sir Robert Peel's cabinet. He went on to be Governor-general of India at the time of the First Anglo-Sikh War and then Commander-in-Chief of the Forces during the Crimean War. Framed in an antique black and gilt frame with old glass. Remounted at a later stage. Some overall toning, one faint mark in background.

1799. Stipple engraving. 160mm by 110mm (platemark). Mungo Park (1771-1806) was a Scottish explorer of the African continent. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River. From the 'European Magazine'.A few small spots within the platemark.

1829. Wood-engraving with original hand-colouring. 425mm by 335mm (sheet). 'The Discovery, Convict Ship (Lying at Deptford), The Vessell, which accompanied Capt. Cook, on his last voyage.' Cooke was an English landscape and marine painter. In 1829 he produced a series of etchings on copper of ships, boats, yachts and barges of the early 1800s.

He produced watercolours for engraving for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, New Botanic Garden 1805-7, New Flora Britannica 1812, and The Botanical Register 1815-19. He also provided drawings for encyclopaedias such as Pantologia and Rees's Cyclopaedia.

1910. Chromolithograph. Vanity Fair medical portrait of Sir John Bland-Sutton FRCS (1855-1936). He was a surgeon at Middlesex Hospital, London, and devoted himself especially to pelvic operations upon women. In 1886 he became assistant surgeon to the hospital for women. At the Royal College of Surgeons he won the Jacksonian prize in 1892 with his essay on diseases of the ovaries and the uterine appendages, their pathology, diagnosis and treatment. Short tear at the bottom of the sheet.

Captain James Cook was so impressed by Lever's collection that he donated objects from his own voyages to the museum. Lever's collection was catalogued by George Shaw. William Angus an English engraver of copper plates for prints and book illustrations. Published in the European Magazine. Small faint waterstain top right corner. Trimmed within platemark and without publication line.

The Loddiges family managed one of the most notable of the eighteenth and nineteenth century plant nurseries that traded in and introduced exotic plants into European gardens.The nursery rose to great prominence during the early nineteenth century under George Loddiges (1786-1846) who published in his serial numbers of The Botanical Cabinet 2000 coloured plates of rare plants introduced into its hothouses and gardens from around the world.With original descriptive text.
