Both volumes are signed and inscribed by the author Franklin Edgerton (died 1963) to Isidore Dyen (died 2008 age 95). Dyen was an American linguist, Professor Emeritus of Malayo-Polynesian and Comparative Linguistics at Yale University.
These are the only known signed and/or inscribed copies of Volumes 38 and 39.
Edgerton was an American linguistic scholar, the Salisbury Professor of Sanskrit and Comparative Philology at Yale University and visiting professor at Benares Hindu Universit. He was also professor of Sanskrit at the University of Pennsylvania. He is well known for this exceptionally literal translation of the Bhagavad Gita which was published as volume 38-39 of the Harvard Oriental Series in 1944.
