Description:
Nuremberg: Gedrückt zu Nürnberg durch Friderich Gutknecht, 1554. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. The first work was first printed in 1535 as "Eyn new gedichte von den Schmeichlern"( VD16 S 478). The third fable appeared as a broadside ca. 1540 (Weller 82, not in VD16). I have been unable to trace an earlier ed. of the second fable. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern vellum over boards (soiled, slightly bowed). The text is in very good condition with a little light dust-soiling, a few small spots on the final two leaves, and soiling to the verso of the final leaf. With two woodcut illustrations and a fine woodcut ornament on the final leaf. No copies traced in North America. Hans Sachs' reworkings of three traditional fables, two by Aesop ("The shepherd flatters the wolf" and "The hares and the frogs"), and one ("the envious man and the miser") by the Latin fabulist Avianus. The first woodcut shows the devious wolf hiding in his cave. The second shows the miser and envious man having their eyes gouged out.…

Florence: nella Stamperia di S.A.R. Per li Tartini, e Franchi, 1725. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, edges of text-block sprinkled red. A very fine copy, printed on thick paper. The large, folding plate of the catafalque (51 x 35 cm.) is also in fine condition. An account of the funeral ceremonies for Cosimo III de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (d. 30 Oct. 1723). The ceremonies took place in the basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence on 16 May 1724.The volume offers us a comprehensive and minutely detailed description of the funeral honors and the decorations that had transformed the church of San Lorenzo. Chief among these was the catafalque built by the architect Alessandro Galilei. The engraving of the large panel is the work of Vincenzo Franceschini, after Galilei's design. The second part of the work contains the funeral oration, delivered by Andrea Alamanni. To the façade of the church, draped with black damask, were affixed three large, inscribed plaques,…

Description:
Rome: Nella Stamperia di Gio. Battista de Caporali, per andare all'Orso, 1729. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in later carta rustica. A fine, fresh copy on crisp paper. Very faint soiling to upper margin. A large historiated initial, decorative head- and tail-pieces. With the arms of Cardinal Polignac on the title page. A very rare account of the elaborate transformation of Piazza Navona to celebrate the birth of the Dauphin Louis, son of King Louis XV of France (1715-1774) and his royal consort MarÃa LeszczyÅ„ska (1703-1768). The Rococo painter Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1750), charged with staging the events, had the piazza "restored" to its ancient glory as the stadium of Domitian, the foundations of which are buried beneath the piazza and give the modern space its distinctive, oblong shape. The spectacle was captured by the Roman painter Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765), who produced a painting of the Piazza in its glory, of which two copies exist. One is in the Louvre, the other in the…
