Buenos Aires: Editorial Estuario, 1969 Early reprint. Warmly inscribed by García Márquez to his nephew, Gustavo, on the first free leaf: "Para Gustavito, / digno hijo de su / padre, que es hijo / del mío, con el / cariño de su tío, / GABO / [rule] / 1971." ["For Gustavito, deserving son of your father, who is the son of my own, with the affection of your uncle, GABO 1971"]. Publisher's bright yellow paper wrappers, lettered in green and blue and with green illustration of an umbrella to front wrapper. A good copy, variously worn with creasing and light soiling to wrappers, some offsetting to first free leaf, light evidence of water damage to text block edge, text block starting at front hinge but with all text intact and relatively clean. A well-used copy, charming with the author's inscription, from the library of the author's close friend's daughter. First published in the magazine Mito in 1955 as Monologo de Isabel viendo…

Mexico: Editorial Hermes, 1972 First Mexican Edition. Presentation copy; signed and inscribed by author on front free endpaper: Par / Marle of Francesc, / bel amigo / Gabriel [underlined] / 91. Publisher's pictorial paper wrappers, with illustrations of jellyfish and starfish to the panels, lettered in black; very good book with a small patch of rubbing to front wrapper, light surface wear to front joint, a bit of soiling to rear inside cover flap, and a tiny spot of dampstaining to top edge of text block. Overall, an excellent copy, very scarce signed. This collection of short stories features the novella La Increible y Triste Historia de la Candida Erendira y de su Abuela Desalmada (The Incredibly Sad Story of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother), which tells the story of a young Latina girl who accidentally sets her house on fire, leaving her and her grandmother homeless. Description:
Colombia: Festival Del Libro Colombiano Early reprint. Signed by García Márquez to first free leaf with his less common "GARCIAM" signature. Publisher's orange paper wrappers, lettered in white. A very good copy with toning to wrappers and text block, a touch of creasing to top right corner, light wear to extremities, otherwise still a pleasing copy signed by the author. In La Hojarasca, García Márquez introduces many plot points and characters that make appearances in his later work, including the fictional town of Macondo, the setting for this novella's plot. The story is told through a disjointed series of events, which center around the death of a widely-hated doctor in the town of Macondo and one family's promise to bury him despite protests from the other townspeople. Like many of the author's novellas and short stories, La Hojarasca serves as a precursor to what would become his most well-known novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude. This…

October 12, 1961. From Warren C. Giles to Dr. Stewart D. Brown, Jr. One page typed on "National League of Professional Baseball Clubs / Carew Tower" letterhead. Near fine tri-folded letter with minor blue pen marking by previous owner. An attractive letter without any nicks or tears. Includes James Spence Authentication (JSA) certificate. In this letter, Warren Giles regrets to inform Stewart Brown, Jr. that he will not be able to attend an upcoming Capital City Club of Atlanta luncheon. Giles served as the president of the National League for eighteen transformative years. During his time as president, among other major changes, the Giants and Dodgers moved to California, and the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, and Montreal Expos joined the NL. Notably, Carew Tower, which is stamped on this letter's letterhead, is where Giles maintained a professional office for his entire tenure as president. Today, the Warren C. Giles Trophy is awarded each year to the National League champion.…

Corke: Printed for Eugene Swiney, 1766 Pirated Corke edition. Bound in contemporary full brown calf, with five raised bands to the spine, contrasting red calf label to the spine, lettered and decorated in gilt, board edges tooled in blind. Very good, with some wear to the extremities, light rubbing to the boards and spine, minor spotting to the fore edge, former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, some minor creasing to the otherwise bright pages. Overall, a tight and unsophisticated copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco red slipcase with a matching chemise. This pirated edition of The Vicar of Wakefield was published in the same year as the first authorized edition that consisted of two volumes printed by R. Collins in London. The pirated Corke edition was also issued in two volumes; in the case of this copy, a previous owner had his binder combine the two parts into a single volume. 1976 [undated, c. early 1970s]. Original 8" x 10" black and white photograph. Inscribed by Irvin: "To Lefty Gomez / Thanks for all the thrills / Monte Irvin / 1976." Portrait of Irvin dressed in a suit and tie, with a phone to his ear. Two tiny nicks to right edge of photo, else fine. Overall, a lovely example with a great association. This photo comes from the personal collection of Lefty Gomez. Monte Irvin played nine years in the Negro leagues with the Newark Eagles before getting the call up to the major leagues in 1949. He was one of the first African American players to break the MLB's color line (Jackie Robinson was the first, two years earlier, when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers). Irvin played seven seasons with the New York Giants, winning a title with the team in 1954 after sweeping the Cleveland Indians. Lefty Gomez won five World Series titles with the Yankees in the 1930s. Gomez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, and Irvin was inducted just one…

1980 Original 8 x 10 black and white photograph. Inscribed by Hubbell: To my good friend / Lefty Gomez / my very best wishes / Carl Hubbell. Photo of Hubbell on the mound, at the end of his follow-through. About fine, with just some light curling to photo. This photo comes from the personal collection of Lefty Gomez. Carl Hubbell is a Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire career with the Giants. He won National League MVP honors twice (1933, 1936) and was selected for nine All-Star games. His most memorable moment in the league came when he struck out five all-time great hitters in a row in the 1934 All-Star Game: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. Lefty Gomez, ace pitcher for the New York Yankees, won five World Series titles with the team in the 1930s and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Hubbell and Gomezs playing careers overlapped significantly, with…

Description:
1972 Vernon "Lefty" Gomez (1908-1989) was born in Rodeo, California, the youngest of eight children, to Francisco and Rita Gomez. He began playing baseball on his hometown team at age thirteen, and by fourteen was pitching throughout central California. In 1928, when Gomez was 20 years old, he signed a contract to play for the San Francisco Seals, and two years later he joined the New York Yankees. Except for a single game in 1943 with the Washington Senators, Gomez spent his entire career with the Yankees (1930-1942). He was a key part of the team's dominant run in the 1930s, which saw them winning five World Series titles. In World Series games, Gomez was undefeated on the mound, boasting a 6-0 record, which still stands today as the longest undefeated winning streak for a pitcher in the World Series. In his relatively short but illustrious career, Gomez was selected for seven All-Star games and won the Triple Crown twice (1934 and 1937). He was the starting pitcher for the American…

About fine book, with just a touch of rubbing to spine ends and board corners; a touch of rubbing to spine ends, else fine unclipped dust jacket. Overall, an excellent example. The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a morbid and satirical alphabet book, in which 26 children - each with names that represent a letter of the alphabet - die off one by one in various ways. The book progresses in rhyming couplets, like "Q is for Quentin who sank in a mire, R is for Rhoda consumed by a fire." The book, praised by Vanity Fair as one of Gorey's "dark masterpieces of surreal morality," is arguably Gorey's most famous work.. Signed. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included. New York: Congdon & Weed, Inc., 1982 Illustrated by Edward Gorey. First edition, first printing. Signed by Gorey to the title page. Publisher's black paper-covered boards with white and pale-green water flower illustration to front and rear, titles in black to spine; in its original dust jacket with identical layout. Near fine book, with a hint of toning to foot of spine, bottom right corner of front board very lightly bumped, and mild rubbing to spine ends and bottom edge of rear board; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine, a touch of rubbing to spine ends and panel edges, and some light smudging to rear panel. Overall, a bright copy. The Water Flowers is Gorey's melancholy Christmas story, in which the main characters concoct a "white sauce" for dinner, made of a mixture of water and flowers. New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1973 First edition, first printing. Signed by Gorey on title page. Publisher's light gray paper wrappers; in the original black paper dust jacket, white paper label with Gorey's illustration of a black armless doll laid onto the front wrapper. About fine book with just a tiny crease to rear wrapper; fine unclipped dust jacket. Overall, an attractive and crisp copy. The Black Doll is Gorey's screenplay for an unproduced silent film. Like many of his works, the plot is set in a Victorian-esque setting. It tells the story of the black doll, a "PRO," or priceless ritual object, from the ancient Asian city of Glub (or Blug), which is sought after by various groups of people. The black doll figure is a recurring figure in Gorey's books, and makes appearances in The Listing Attic (1954), The Willowdale Handcar (1962), The Tunnel Calamity (1984), and The Raging Tide (1987). Michigan: 4 November 1983 Two pages, written over two leaves of Hank Greenberg personalized letterhead, with the original envelope addressed in Greenberg's hand. Fine letter, with just a touch of creasing to the envelope. Both Hank Greenberg and the recipient of the letter, Al Kaline, were Hall of Fame players with strong associations to the Detroit Tigers. Greenberg played the first twelve (1930, 1933-41, 1945-46) of his thirteen seasons in the MLB with the Tigers. Kaline, nicknamed "Mr. Tiger," spent his entire 22-year playing career with the team (1953-1974), and he continued to work within the organization until his death in 2020. During their time in the league, Greenberg was the AL home run leader four times and he won the AL Most Valuable Player Award twice, while Kaline won ten Gold Gloves and earned a spot on eighteen All-Star teams. Kaline passed Greenberg on the Tiger all-time leader list for home runs in 1968, and still sits atop the list today with 399 (Greenberg is in…

1940 Original 9" x 7" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of the 1940 Detroit Tigers after winning the pennant, featuring future Hall of Famers Earl Averill, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, and Hal Newhouser. Fine. Overall, a fresh and clean photo. In 1940, the Detroit Tigers lost in the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games. Notably, Hank Greenberg won the second of his two AL MVP Awards that year (1935, 1940). Greenberg played the first twelve of his thirteen seasons in the MLB with the Tigers (1930, 1933-41, 1945-46). During his time in the league, Greenberg was a 5x All-Star and 4x AL home run leader. Earl Averill was a 6x All-Star whose promising career was cut short by back injuries. He made the news a couple of times for unfortunate reasons, including hitting the ball that broke Dizzy Dean's toe - an injury that ultimately signaled the decline of Dean's career - and boarding a flight for an old-timers' game in the 1960s with his bat in a gun case. Team photo of the 1934 Detroit Tigers after winning the pennant, featuring future Hall of Famers Hank Greenberg, Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer, and "Goose" Goslin. Light crease to top left corner, else fine. Overall, a great vintage photo. The 1934 Detroit Tigers won the AL pennant, but fell just short of winning a World Series title, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in a seven-game series. The next year, the Tigers made it back to the World Series and won in six games against the Chicago Cubs. A very good copy, some light soiling to boards and sunning to spine, else very clean and bright; in a very good slipcase with wear to extremities. Overall, a beautiful copy of this copiously illustrated non-fiction text. Published to commemorate the 550th anniversary of the opening of the Turkish Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, this book contains photographs and text that illustrate the rich history of the market and its vendors. The Grand Bazaar, opened in 1461, was originally intended to encourage trade in what was then Constantinople, under the newly established reign of the Ottoman Empire. Textile traders set up stalls in the covered Byzantine structure, and the building was a hub for locals and visitors alike. Over time, the market grew to…
