Second, it had a gun already evaluated in the French AMX-30 MBT which Chile would eventually acquire in the late 1970s. The M-51s were well-received and successful. They offered more interior room than the T-54/55 series, the lighter M41, M24 and the AMX-30, particularly appreciated in the colder regions in the south where thicker clothing could be worn. Israel developed a 60 mm Hyper-Velocity Medium Support weapon system. It was decided to use it in the M-50, to be ordered by Chile, and M24 Chaffees already in Chilean service. These weapons included homemade mortars such as a small number of the locally-designed and built Davidka (Little David), pre-WW1 Napoleonchik Howitzers, and ex British QF (Quick firing) 25-pounder guns/howitzers. Small quantities of other vintage or near vintage pieces dating back to both world wars, were also purchased or otherwise acquired from various sources and used as well. In the beginning, by necessity, some of these weapons were combined with various vehicles also obtained from multiple sources. Having already seen the improvisations made using the Sherman tank chassis in Volume 1 and 2, plus different weapon systems mounted on American-built half-tracks in Volume 3, this fourth volume looks at IDF self-propelled artillery up-to-date..
