He had a strong proclivity for and obvious skill in producing outdoor adventure stories, and his best works fall within that category.
* The second volume in Rathborne's Ranch and Range series, features Karl the young cowboy and Cuthbert Lee his tenderfoot "pard". This novel take place in a lone dugout in the pine woods. There is trouble for the two prairie chums right from the first chapter, whether it be facing death in a bear's den or brought to bay by the gray terror of the pines.
