Description:
Northridge, California: Lord John Press, 1984. Signed, numbered, and finely bound first edition. Hardcover. This is a pristine, as-new copy of the strikingly beautiful signed and numbered limited first edition of President Gerald R. Ford's November 30, 1983 address to the English-Speaking Union in London. One of 100 copies issued thus, this is copy #85, signed by President Ford on the half title, hand-numbered on the limitation page, bound with a vellum spine and mahogany patterned paper boards, and issued in a gilt-stamped linen clamshell case. This limited edition should not to be confused with the less elaborate and more common issue of 250 copies bound in linen and decorative paper. The English-Speaking Union (ESU) is an international educational charity founded in 1918. Winston Churchill was Chairman of the ESU from 1921 to 1925 and The Churchill Lecture is the most prestigious event in the annual ESU programme. The Churchill medal of honour is awarded every year at the annual Churchill Lecture,… Read More

Description:
3 October 1939. This Second World War propaganda poster is an original caricature of Winston S. Churchill drawn on 3 October 1939, just a month after the Second World War began. The piece seems likely both unique and the work of a German soldier. The piece measures 12.25 x 8.5 inches (31.1 x 21.6 cm). The drawing features a slightly demonically-rendered countenance of Winston S. Churchill wearing a hat high on his head and cocked to the right with a stylized, gloved hand clawing around the brim. ChurchillÂ’s eyes are slightly asymmetrical and horizontally elongated, the roundness of his face slightly and unflatteringly exaggerated, his mouth open. The net effect is oddly evocative of an inebriated, rotund, clumsily malign and yet simultaneously ridiculous German burgher. The drawing, measuring 4.5 x 3.5 inches (11.4 x 8.9 cm) and framed by two border rules, occupies the upper center of the paper below a prominent, underscored title labeling the image “Unser Feind!” (“Our Enemy!”).… Read More

Description:
London & Glasgow: Gowans and Gray, Ltd., 1924. First edition. Paperback. This scarce 1924 paperback is a personal reminiscence of Winston S. ChurchillÂ’s improbable and extraordinary active service at the Front during the First World War. “The soldiers of ChurchillÂ’s command in Flanders in 1916 received him dubiously as an exiled politician plied regularly with luxury parcels from home; by the end of his tour of duty Churchill had earned their respect.” In this scarce and compelling book, “The author, who served with him, expounds favorably on the transformation.” That author, anonymously credited as “Captain X” in this publication, was Captain Andrew Dewar Gibb (1888-1974). Gibb served with ChurchillÂ’s Royal Scots Fusiliers, eventually achieving the rank of Major. Gibb later became a member of the English Bar, a distinguished legal scholar, lecturer in English and Scots law at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge, and eventually Dean of the University of GlasgowÂ’s Law Faculty. Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1981. First edition. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition of Companion Volume V, Part 2 of the Official Biography of Sir Winston Churchill. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes was completed in 2019. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are perhaps the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. The British and U.S. first editions saw just a single printing and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many first edition Official Biography sets will forever do without. The… Read More

Description:
Norwalk, Connecticut: Easton Press, 1994. Full leather. This is a fine, full, twelve-volume set of the Easton Press edition of the Official Biography of Winston Churchill. Begun by Randolph Churchill and completed by Martin Gilbert, Churchill's Official Biography is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The eight massive main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. Together, these main text volumes comprise the narrative story of Churchills entire, long life. Even grander than the British first editions is this superlative set of the Official Biography main text volumes produced by The Easton Press in 1994. Easton produced this set as twelve volumes (more manageably sized than the original eight, splitting each of the last four volumes into two volumes). The Easton Press edition claims 24 inches of shelf space, weighs 36 pounds, and fills nearly 8,700 pages. Moreover, it is the finest edition of the Official Biography to date. Each volume is bound in dark red… Read More
