A CLOSE FRIEND OF LAWRENCE STERNEHALL-STEVENSON, JOHN. Fables for Grown Gentlemen: or, A Fable for every Day on the Week. 4to. Disbound. London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley. 1761. First Edition.Hall-Stevenson was a friend of Laurence Sterne, and was immortalized in Sterne's Tristam Shandy and Sentimental Journey Through France and England. He also claimed friendship with John Wilkes, Horace Walpole and Rousseau. Notorious for licentious verse, he published a Lyric Epistle (1760) to Sterne on the triumph of Tristram Shandy, which Gray called "absolute nonsense." Better known were his Fables for Grown Gentlemen. Horace Walpole credited Hall-Stevenson with "a vast deal of original humour and wit."Hall-Stevenson gave some financial support to his friend Sterne, who often visited him at Skelton. They liked to race chariots over the sands at Saltburn. Hall-Stevenson appears under the name of 'Eugenius' in Sterne's novels Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. The latter was…

Description:
THE CONCEPTUAL ORIGIN OF "NEWSPEAK"8vo. Contemporary full calf; gilt decorations on spine; spine label; green silk bookmark. A Paris, Chez Les Marchands De Nouveautés, 1797. First Edition.La Harpe was the first to denounce an essential mechanism of terror, the manipulation of language; or the concept of "Newspeak," as developed by George Orwell in 1984.La Harpe shows how revolutionaries gave words new meanings to handle the crowds. They established a "reverse language" that allowed spying in the name of freedom, tyranny in the name of equality, massacre in the name of fraternity, persecution in the name of tolerance, etc. This inversion of language - which led to the guillotine and the Vendée "genocide" - was set up by the so-called Enlightenment philosophers, including Voltaire who consistently associated the word "fanatical" with Catholic. Binding worn and chipped at lower spine and bottom edge; endpapers refreshed; generally clean internally. Scarce.

Description:
Illustrated with 72 mounted albumin photographs. 32mo. Full vellum with Romulus and Remus gilt stamp on front and back covers; spines relaid; red spine labels, gilt lettering. Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz1860. 2 volumes. A commercial undertaking as evidenced by the poor paper quality and sloppy pasting and cutting of photos. Nevertheless, an interesting example of a "grangerized" work when extra illustrations were added by Grand Tour Victorian tourists, a market clearly courted by Tauchnitz European Editions of the classics. Bookplates; some peeling and partial loss to spines, inner hinges crudely repaired.

Description:
Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 14 engraved plates. 8vo. Original publisher's plain paper boards, chipped paper label on spine. London, Published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy, 1824. First and only edition of Royal Naval officer Sir Henry Heathcote's demonstration of the effectiveness of his patented design for an improved arrangement of staysails. The Naval and Military Magazine (1827, Vol. I) reviewed the work, commenting: "However elaborate the diagrams, practical proofs must always be preferred on professional points; and, though the baronet is backed by Euclid, and assures his readers he is supported in his theory by the opinions of experienced officers, it is not too much here to assert, that the majority of both the new and old school will dispute the utility of staysails, in any shape, set upon a wind; and few, it is presumed, will approve of the cut of Sir Henry's jib." The same journal later notes that several naval commanders have reviewed the staysails favorably, and that they…
