Despite its romantic excess, Ramona (1884) is possibly the most famous California novel and important for both its literary and historical facets. In much the same way that Uncle Tom's Cabin helped to arouse public sentiment against slavery, the abuse of California Indians depicted in Ramona helped to bring about reforms in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Jackson herself was appointed special commissioner to examine the condition of the Mission Indians in California. New York: James F. Drake, Inc, 1926. Hardcover. Bound collection of 14 consecutive catalogues issued by James F. Drake, Inc., with the original wrappers intact. The firm of James F. Drake, Inc. was established in 1911 by James Frederick Drake (1863-1933) for the sale of rare books and manuscripts. For the native New Yorker the firm represented the culmination of a career in books and publishing that was already of thirty years' duration. Drake's sons, Marston and James, entered the firm in the teens, and by the time of the senior Drake's death the firm on West 40th Street was a mecca for bibliophiles in the New York area. The Drake brothers continued in the tradition of their father, but upon the retirement of Marston ("the Colonel") and death in 1965 of Jim the entire stock of the firm and its business records were acquired by the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas. One of James' four contributions to the See America First series, preceded by California, Romantic and Beautiful (1914), Arizona, the Wonderful (1917), and New Mexico, The Land of the Delight Makers (1920). Discusses both the history and natural beauty of the Beehive State in a characteristically romantic fashion, and includes an excellent account of the Mormon migration and influence in Utah. Octavo. In the original green cloth binding, with lovely Art Nouveau designs stamped in gilt, cream, blue, and green. In the exceedingly scarce dust jacket and two-part box with paper title labels. Light browning to the extremities of the dust jacket, with some shallow chipping to the spine head. The box is soiled and splitting along the seams, with some general edgewear and light staining. Complete examples are rare, and one would be hard pressed to find a better one.

Influenced by his own experiences with the Navajo and other indigenous peoples of the American Southwest, James (1858-1923) expressed sympathy, admiration, and recognition of Native Americans in his writings, eschewing the "vanishing race" narrative and other forms of Social Darwinism popular among many of his contemporaries. He made it his mission to "break down his countrymen's resistance to acknowledge fundamental Indian humanity" and maintained that whites refused to acknowledge the good in Indians "because of a strange psychological tendency among people to deny the honorable and noble in those that they have injured." James's work as a medievalist and scholar is still highly regarded, but he is best remembered for his ghost stories, which some consider among the best in the genre. He redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings.
