New Haven & London: Yale University Press, 2014. 1st. h/b. Very good, 1st edition, unclipped d/j. Various underlinings and dog-ears.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). How a popular religious war erupted on the Dutch-German border, despite the ideals of religious tolerance proclaimed by the Enlightenment. In a remote village on the Dutch-German border, a young Catholic woman named Cunegonde tries to kidnap a baby to prevent it from being baptized in a Protestant church. When she is arrested, fellow Catholics stage an armed raid to free her from detention. These dramatic events of 1762 triggered a cycle of violence, starting a kind of religious war in the village and its surrounding region. Contradicting our current understanding, this war erupted at the height of the Age of Enlightenment, famous for its religious toleration. Cunegonde's Kidnapping tells in vivid detail the story of this hitherto unknown conflict. Drawing characters, scenes, and dialogue straight from a body of exceptional primary… Read More

This personal travel book about Italy is written by the author of the prize-winning ""Allegro Postillions"" and ""The Strangers' Gallery"". The author's travels take him to an Italy of neglected grandeur, hidden beauty and preposterous paradox - where the past lies in wait for the present and where history is never far away. The book looks at a magician's cave in Piedmont, Chinese mummies in Umbria, Tuscan nightingales and bumps in the Venetian night.

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 2000. 1st. h/b. Fine, 1st edition, SIGNED. 8vo: royal (250 x 170 / 10"" x 6_""). While held hostage by fundamentalist Shi'ite militiamen in the suburbs of Beirut, Brian Keenan was visited and sustained by the presence of Turlough O'Carolan - the legendary blind Irish harper of the seventeenth century. This novel is thus a re-creation of an extraordinary historical story and a personal debt repaid. It is also, obliquely, a parallel life - another life imprisoned, shaped by the dark.Narrated largely by O'Carolan from his death-bed, and through the recollections of those closest to him, Turlough powerfully brings to life a lost Ireland of famine and disease, eviction and oppression. Stalking through the broken and dispossessed comes Turlough O'Carolan, the musical prodigy, blinded by smallpox and now an itinerant harper, lauded by the aristocracy and a hero to his people. His Rabelaisian desire for drink and women is counterpointed by his artistic struggle towards the great music… Read More

Description:
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2020. 1st. h/b. Fine, as new.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Among our greatest leaders are those driven by impulses they cannot completely control - by lust. Lust is not, however, an abstraction, it has definition. Definition that, given the impact of leaders who lust, is essential to extract. This book identifies six types of lust with which leaders are linked: 1. Power: the ceaseless craving to control. 2. Money: the limitless desire to accrue great wealth. 3. Sex: the constant hunt for sexual gratification. 4. Success: the unstoppable need to achieve. 5. Legitimacy: the tireless claim to identity and equity. 6. Legacy: the endless quest to leave a permanent imprint. Each of the core chapters focuses on different lusts and features a cast of characters who bring lust to life. In the real world leaders who lust can and often do have an enduring impact. This book therefore is counterintuitive - it focuses not on moderation, but on immoderation.

New York: Flatiron, 2022. 1st. h/b. Fine, as new (d/j in protective sleeve).. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). In They Knew, New York Times best-selling author Sarah Kendzior explores the United StatesÕ Òculture of conspiracy,Ó putting forth a timely and unflinching argument: uncritical faith in broken institutions is as dangerous as false narratives peddled by propagandists. Conspiracy theories are on the rise because officials refuse to enforce accountability for real conspiracies. They Knew discusses conspiracy culture in a rapidly declining United States struggling with corruption, climate change, and other crises. As the actions of the powerful remain shrouded in mystery Ð like the Jeffrey Epstein operation Ð it is unsurprising that people turn to conspiracy theories to fill the informational void. They Knew exposes the tactics these powerful actors use to placate an inquisitive public. In KendziorÕs signature whip smart prose and eviscerating arguments, They Knew unearths decades of buried… Read More

On the edge of a small Australian town, far from the battlefields of the Second World War, a camp holds thousands of Japanese, Italian and Korean prisoners of war. London: Sceptre, 2016. 1st UK. paperback. Fine, uncorrected proof. Pristine.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). On the island of St Helena in the south Atlantic ocean, Napoleon spends his last years in exile. It is a hotbed of gossip and secret liaisons, where a blind eye is turned to relations between colonials and slaves. The disgraced emperor is subjected to vicious and petty treatment by his captors, but he forges an unexpected ally: a rebellious British girl, Betsy, who lives on the island with her family and becomes his unlikely friend. Based on fact, Napoleon's Last Island is the surprising story of one of history's most enigmatic figures and a British family who dared to associate with him. It is a tale of vengeance, duplicity and loyalty, and of a man whose charisma made him dangerous to the end.

Australia and its government--and two people in particular--look to events in Asia with alarm. 'Paperboy' Tyson's privlieged relationship with the Prime Minister, Johnny Mulhall, gives him insight into the man's public and private affairs. Maimed in the first world war, Tyson, now a political reporter, knows all too well the feelings of his countryman and Mulhall shares this ambivalence, on the one hand rallying the nation to action and, on the other, feeling the burden of the thousands of young men he sends to south-Asia. Australia struggles to find a national identity and a place in the world. Mulhall finds himself strangely entangled in a personal dilemma which is no less weighty than the demans of his public role as a monarch in a cut-rate kingdom.
