The first three volumes (in 9 books) of this vast scholarly exploration of how European knowledge of Asia influenced the history of Europe from 1500 to 1800. A lifetime's work by Lach went into these volumes, which bear comparison for their sweep, breadth and vision with the histories of Arnold Toynbee and Joseph Needham. Invaluable for serious students in any number of disciplines, these volumes include an enormous amount of material of especial interest to anyone concerned with the European publication history of early works concerning Asia. For example, to quote a review article by M. N. Pearson on just one aspect: "Volume 3 is close to two-thousand pages and, for example,…

Description:
Paulin, Paris, first edition, 1849. Printed wrappers, 8vo,. 64 pp. An important contribution to the battle of the pamphlets provoked by the prosecution of Guglielmo Libri. "The most impressive of the works in Libri's defence came from the pen of Paul Lacroix. In the autumn of 1849 he published his Lettres à M. Hatton, ... They were the 'statements in which I present myself as witness for the defence' which Hatton had not allowed him to give orally. He presented the accused as a generous donor to - and publicist of - libraries, two roles incompatible with that of a thief; as a collector whose bulk buying was sure to have contained some books once in public libraries (perhaps sold by them as duplicates); as someone whose exchange of a book with Carpentras was perfectly regular, and whose private sale to Ashburnham was justified. In 1848 the revolution had unchained his enemies and 'Mr Libri was turned over to his enemies bound hands and feet: his residence invaded by them;…

Description:
Moonraker Press, Bradford-on-Avon, first edition, 1978. Cloth, 4to,. xv, 184 pp, 56 pp of maps, plans, ports, plates. In their solutions to the problems posed in the alterations and remodelling carried out on the Elizabethan house the successive Revival architects -among them Lancelot Brown, Humphry Repton and John Nash - who worked at Corsham Court made a significant contribution to English architectural history. This detailed and scholarly study of the complex period from 1749 to 1849 describes and discusses both the actual construction and the theories that governed the designs, and in so doing throws considerable light upon the inter-action of patronage and taste. In this valuable book Dr Ladd considers the increasing importance attached to Gothic Revival architectural theory and the effect on it of the dual nature of the Elizabethan-Renaissance style, and discusses the reasons for the growing eclecticism of the period under review. He then goes on to analyse the implications of Nash's…

Matador, Leicester, first edition, 2010. Cloth, small 4to, 26 cm,. xviii, 611 pp, ills. From the blurb - "The intriguing story and turbulent history of a paper Charles Dickens praised for its 'range of information and profundity of knowledge, and which Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, simply endorsed with the remark: Of course I read The Sporting Life'. It was the Queen Mothers love of horseracing that made her such an avid reader of the Life and coverage of that sport forms the core of this book, but there is so much more to fascinate the reader including eyewitness accounts of the first fight for the heavyweight championship of the world and Captain Webb's heroic Channel swim of 1875. Highlights in the history of cricket, football and rugby are also featured, while chapters on coursing and greyhound racing rank alongside surreal reports on . ratting contests and songbird singing competitions. And for 30 years Tommy Wisdom made his motoring reports unique by…

Sotheby Parke Bernet, London, [first] edition, 1980. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. xxi, 455 pp, [16] pp of plates. From the blurb: "British painters have always excelled in the art of watercolour; indeed, the tradition in this field is second to none in Europe. It is the medium which above all has recorded exactly the colours and textures of the British landscape. The National Collection of Watercolours, housed in the Department of Paintings in the Victoria and Albert Museum, embraces the British achievement in this field from the mid-seventeenth century to the present day. Both works by little known and unrecorded artists and examples by every major British watercolourist combine to make this national collection truly comprehensive. The purpose of this book is two-fold: to present a thorough catalogue listing and give basic information on over 5,600 works by some 1,600 artiste, and also to serve as a visual dictionary of the British watercolour tradition. Each artist is discussed in a brief biographical…
