Description:
Cassell. First edition of this comprehensive collection of horror short stories, edited by Alexander Laing and published by Cassell in 1937. The book and wrapper are in very good or better condition. The wrapper has wear to the spine ends and corners but is all there. There is a patch of browning to the top of the front panel. It displays the correct price of 8/6 net on the spine. The book has a gentle push to one corner and the spine ends. Overall a nice copy. The editor Laing has put together a who's who of horror short story writers, for what the publishers claim is the first illustrated omniibus of ghost stories. Algernon Blackwood, M.R. James, Arthur Machen, Edgar Allan Poe, Saki, Ambrose Bierce and Edith Wharton all contribute haunted tales. The real star of the show though is illustrator Lynd Ward who contributes 62 illustrations, either full page, vignettes or tail pieces to accompany each story. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1937.

David Nutt. London: David Nutt, 1887 12mo., plain card wraps with fitted dust jacket printed in red and black; outer edges untrimmed; pp. [xi], vi-xx, [iii], 4-70, [ii]; featuring a frontis by P.J. Hood behind loose tissue guard, a little creased, browned, and shelf-worn, previous owner's bookplate to ffep; very lightly cracked along gutter at p. [x-xi]; a very good copy of this unusual work. Limited edition, one of just 500 copies printed on Japanese Paper. Translated by the author in June, and published in November 1887. Rendered into English here for the first time by the Scottish poet and novelist Andrew Lang, Aucassin and Nicolette is a French fictional story likely written in the late 12th or early 13th century, of which just one extant manuscript still survives. A classic romantic epic featuring war and forbidden love, it combines prose and verse into what is known as a chantefable - literally translating as a 'sung story'. "He tells a love story",…

The University of Hull. LARKIN, Philip The Brynmor Jones Library 1929-1979 Hull: The University of Hull, 1979 8vo., photographic card wrappers featuring a wraparound image of the building's exterior; pp. [v], 6-36; 4 pp. Of black and white photographs between p. 8-9 and 28-29; overall light toning, staples a little rusted; essentially, though, fine. First issue of an original pamphlet on the subject of Hull University Library, signed and underlined by the author to the title. In 1979, the Brynmor Jones Library, located on campus at the University of Hull, marked its 50th year anniversary. At the time it was written, Philip Larkin was Librarian and, although it was published anonymously, evidence of the author can be found in both his photograph (printed towards the rear of the text - captioned simply 'Professor T. E. Jessop and the Librarian at the Jubilee exhibition in the Library, May 1978'), and the list of Librarians to the rear of the text: Miss…

Description:
Hodder and Stoughton. London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., 1999 8vo., bright red publisher's boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, with navy endpapers, gold ribbon marker, and unclipped pictorial dust jacket (£9.99) with cover illustration by Andy Bridge, and a brooding black and white photograph of the author to the lower flap by The Douglas Brothers; tiny white mark to upper board, mild compression, ribbon marker a touch frayed, otherwise an essentially fine copy, apparently unread. Much coveted by Le Carre collectors, this the rare promotional edition, signed by the author to the title page. With full number line 1-10 denoting first impression, this version is the true first, appearing before the release of the trade edition, and with the 'juggling' artwork for the jacket which was later replaced by a gold and black version featuring a spiral staircase. John Le Carre was the pen name for David J. M. Cornwell, who worked for the Secret Service during WWII as…
