Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1728. Complete in 5 parts (various paginations) with frontispiece and 242 half-page engravings by Henri Cause, many based on those of François Chauveau. There also are attractiveengraved tailpieces following many of the fables. The 5th part of the Fables is not included in many editions; so this more complete edition is quite desirable. Recently and sympathetically rebound in full leather with the original spine and front & rear panels laid down. Internally clean with only an occasional hint of foxing; small chips out of margins of 5 leaves, not affecting text or images. Cleveland, Ohio: Unpublished, 1959. Original Watercolor. Archivally matted (18" by 22") and ready for framing. Signed by the artist lower right portion of the image. Robert Laessig (1913-2010) studied in the Textile Design School of Plauen, Germany specializing in the painting of flowers. He also studied at the Art Students' League in New York City. For many years he was art director at American Greetings. He is listed in Who's Who in America and is a member of the National Academy of Design. He painted the official White House Christmas Card for five years during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. He won an Ohio Watercolor Society Gold Medal, the Winsor Newton Award, the top award in the National Academy of Design Exhibition, and was a prize winner at the Butler International Art Show. Laessig is also known for using elements of batik, specifically treating his canvases and rice paper with a wax coating before applying his finishing imagery. New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1914. x, 93 pages.  12mo.  First printing of the first edition of this play, that was Lawrence's fifth published book .  Because this edition preceded the British edition, this is the true first edition.  Both this play and an earlier short story, "Odour of Chrysanthemums," are transparently autobiographical and reflect Lawrence's attempts to mourn the death of his uncle .  The book is in very good+ condition: clean and tight, with some rubbing of the color on edges of covers; a tiny rubbed spot on page 75 affects 2 letters in one word.  The rare dustjacket, is, as expected, 4mm shorter than the book and has a printed "$1.25 net" price label covering the original $1.00 price on the spine.  The jacket is in very good condition: lightly toned and has a reading crease along the spine (N in Lawrence and L in Holroyd on spine have tiny scrape where crease hits); very light soiling limited to the spine of the… Read More

New York: Camera Club of New York, 1899. Published in Camera Notes, volume 3, number I (July 1899). Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 7 3/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches. René Le Bègue was a Parisian photographer who founded the Photo-Club de Paris and was the first French photographer elected to England's Linked Ring. Alfred Stieglitz recognized his talent when he included six of Le Bègue's photographs in his personal collection. The semi-nude portrait offered here is typical for Le Bègue, who almost exclusively photographed nude women. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually as-new condition. New York: The Viking Press, 1938. First edition limited to 525 copies SIGNED, withou inscription, by both Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson on the limitation page. Lawson was the only person to have won both the Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal. WEE GILLIS was a Caldecott Honor book in 1939. The burlap cloth covered book is clean, tight, and fresh, with barely a hint of the spine toning that is usually seen on this edition. The glassine dust jacket is not present, but the original slipcase is present. It is clean and bright, with minimal tanning and some rubbing along edges; edges of top and bottom strips have been repaired.. SIGNED. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Original bookseller's stamp on front pastedown endpaper. Pages are lightly toned; page 105 has a 1" closed tear in bottom margin. Still an attractive copy in new mylar jacket!. First Edition. But the page numbering problems in all known copies are present: page numbers 33-48 and 178-192 are not used; numbering of pages 82-95 is not sequential; and page numbers 97-103, 204-205, 106-107, 208, 109, and 112 are duplicated. Attributed to L'Estrange by Donald Wing, the book chronicles the "Popish Plot", alleged treasonous acts of Jesuits against the rule of Charles II. This is a scarce title: ESTC locates only 26 copies in world libraries, and this is the only copy we can locate on the market at this time. Recently rebound in full brown morocco with tooling appropriate to the 17th century. Internally clean with lightly tanned, but still supple, pages that are age-worn at the corners.
