Description:
Spooner, Wisconsin, 1905.
Four card-mounted photographs, each measuring approximately 7" x 5". One of the cards is blind-stamped "L. L. Richardson, Spooner, Wis." and one has a later annotation on the reverse, "Shell Lake Lumber / Spooner, Wisconsin." The photographs are in nice shape; there is some wear and soiling to the cards; one card has a marginal dampstain.
The photographs show:
* Seven lumberjacks posed on a small dock with an axe, adze, and two-man crosscut saw,
* Five lumberjacks resting on a large log in front of what appears to be a very large hoist or crane,
* Two lumberjacks posing in front of a 15-foot high log pile taking a break from stripping bark, and
* Two lumberjacks posing with a two-horse team in a snowy clearing. L. L. Richardson was a Walworth County photographer who worked from a shop in Spooner between 1905 and 1906.
Shell Lake Lumber was the largest lumbering company in the region during the early 1900s. The rivers and streams in this area of Wisconsin were not suitable… Read More

Description:
Charleston, South Carolina, 1818. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page folded letter measures about 15¾" x 10" unfolded. It is datelined Charleston April 8th, 1817, and was sent by Jnoen Fagan to "Mr. Robert Leckie / U. S. Ordnance Service / Augusta, Geo." It bears a red circular postmark reading "CHALSN SC / APR / 11" and an 18½ rate mark which was the postage cost to send a letter from 150 to 400 miles. In nice shape. At the time, Leckie had just finished building two military arsenals, one at Richmond, Virginia, and the other at Augusta, Georgia. His next project was to build a canal system from the port at Charleston through the Fall Line that would allow inland settlements to ship goods by water to the ports which was far preferable than by inadequate and often impassible roads. Irish masons from the north under Leckie's direction worked on this Landsford Canal until its completion in 1823. Traffic was never high, and its use was discontinued by 1840. In this letter Fagan, the… Read More

Description:
Mainz, Germany: Johann Schoeffer, 1533. Disbound. Very good. The History of Rome, originally titled Annales, and often referred to as Ab Urbe Condita (From the Founding of the City) is a monumental history of ancient Rome, written in Latin between 27 and 9 BC by the Roman historian Titus Livius (Livy). The work covers the period from the legends concerning the arrival of Aeneas and the refugees from the fall of Troy, to the city's founding in 753 BC, the expulsion of the Kings in 509 BC, and down to Livy's own time, during the reign of the emperor Augustus. This leaf (8" x 11½") discusses the conflicts between Rome, Carthage, and Macedon during the Punic and Macedonian Wars of the Third Century BC. It is from a version published in Mainz by Johann Schoeffer in 1533. It features a large illustration titled,"Wie die statt Abydos von dem konig Philippo gewunnen und jamerlich zerstort ward ("How the city of Abydos was won by King Philippo and miserably destroyed") which showings Macedonian… Read More

Description:
Bennington, Vermont, 1855. Not Applicable. Very good. We recently acquired two Bennington, flint enamel, Rockingham Glaze pottery book flasks. They bear no maker's' marks but almost certainly were the products of Lyman, Fenton & Co., Bennington, VT. 1849-1858. They appear to have been made from the same form; both measure approximately 4¼" x 5" x 2" and hold approximately one pint of liquid. This flask is colored in mottled deep brown and cream with some traces of dark blue. The title "DEPARTED / SPIRITS" has been stamped on the spine but is difficult to see because of the deep brown color. It is in good shape with a little light scuffing and tiny chips that have been touched up Its original, now hardened stopper is inside the flask but could perhaps be removed with a little persistence. A new cork will be provided. . (For more information, see the "Archive for the 'Flint Enamel' Category" at the This Day in Pottery History website.) These flasks were made in three sizes: one pint, two… Read More
